1972 is about the only year I would consider a USA market SL. In later years they had all sorts of special and unique problems that make them not worth it, including:
- Sealed beam headlights with about the brightness of a cigarette lighter
- Anemic performance after about 1974 (e.g. later 450s are 160hp vs 200 in AU and 225 in europe)
- Chrysler sourced climate control that never works and costs and arm and a leg to fix
- Railway sleeper bumper bars from 1973
- Single row timing chain for first 3 years of 380SL
- 1974-75 models have catalatic converters in the engine bay who's heat causes massive problems
and top it off that they are generally not cheaper than a RHD local car.
