The timing chain job is almost done, I went by the workshop today as I had left something in the car that I needed this weekend.

The old valve stem seals were very hard, so hopefully my car will no longer be smoking.

even worse was the broken guide that was like a ticking time bomb. Even though my guides were not too discoloured one of them was broken.

Good news is that all timing marks line up, so I can assume the lower sproket is not worn.

Coffee coloured guides are not a good sign as I recall, even if the chain is ok I'd be thinking about doing the guides and tensioner.

I was going to say exactly the same thing probably two months down the track from the previous post - plus the mileage is fairly high. For what it's worth. Regards Styria

N.B. Having now read all of the thread and the work you have had carried out, my post is superfluous. I take my hat off to you in relation to the methodical manner in which you tackle all of the jobs. Well done, and I hope the car will form a long term addition to your fleet of cars.

Bryce, from what I have been told, your 560 has covered quite some distance.

After reviewing this thread, I can't find anything regarding that a compression test has been done, that may indicate engine wear.
Valve stem seals have been replaced.
It follows that a compression test should reveal that things have improved, but cylinder bore and piston ring wear may still be a problem.

Might still be worth doing a compression test. Not much extra expense involved.

Compression test is probably worth doing although I have not seen sympoms of engine wear so far.
- mileage is 164k mi which is pretty low for one of these
- I've not seen anything that would indicate bad rings or bores
- Camshafts look in good condition, making me thing it was serviced correctly

Hi Bryce.
You mentioned that one of the guides was broken.
Did you have to remove that head to rectify it?

Did you do the valve guide seals yourself?

Many thanks.

I didn't tackle this one myself. It is being done by an independent Mercedes mechanic.

When I am referring to guides, I am talking about chain guides, and these can be done without the head being removed. Valve guides, on the other hand require head removal.

Seals can also be done without head removal.

Brian,

I’ve had wifi the whole time at the 2 hotels we stayed at in Japan.

So posted when I could.
But most nights out entertaining customers.

A very busy week.
Here is a teaser of what we did through the very busy streets of down town Tokyo.

Hi Styria,
I’m sorry to say I don’t like wearing anything on my feet without shoe laces :D

That’s me on the right in the purple.
This is what we got up to in very busy Tokyo traffic.

Mario Karting, so much fun for a full 2 hours.
The karts go up to 60kph, and stop on a dime.

Oh dear; the streets are deserted. Clearly M13.5 people left town for the day.
May I be indiscreet and ask: was it your driving or your clothing that most frightened the good citizens of Tokyo?:eek::eek:
Regards,
Brian

It was very early when we kicked off Brian, but you can see some more traffic in the other shots.

But yes, you may be right about the costumes mate.

We did do some pretty full on truck work as well during our trip.

Back to the 560, I picked it up yesterday and so far so good. The smoking problem seems to have been cured with the new valve stem seals, and the chain / guides being done gives me a lot of piece of mind. It was only a 15 min drive back, but will take the car on an extended drive later to see if it is truly cured.

That’s great news Bryce.

The chain and guide issue is now sure to give you some peace of mind.

I am very keen to hear how the smoke issue is as mine does exactly the same thing when quite hot after sitting at the lights.
A small puff of blue smoke when driving off.

Bryce,
What brand and grade of engine oil are you running in the 560?

Took the car out for a longer drive this evening. Night drives make it easy to see any smoke in the headlights of the car behind you at the lights, and I can confirm my 560 has quit smoking.

I've noticed how rough the paint felt on the car, so when I got back I tried the clay bar. The bar was well and truly used when I had finished but finally slid along the paintwork as it should.
