And to add insult to current injury, its also ran out of petrol in my garage what with all the revving and prolonged idling its done trying to pressurise the pump.

Another pump has been located, all I need now is about 6 more hours per day - 24 just isn't enough anymore :)

You will loose only a few teaspons of hydro oil when changing the pump. When yo first run the engine with the new pump, you may want to have the high pressure hose routed into a canister so that you can discard the first bit of fluid it pumps out - in order to flush out any dirt that may be in the pump.

Oh yay! the freakin beast is finally fixed! God bless W126s and their hydro pumps - finally found a use for a W126 ;) (apologise to W126 owners / fans, I'm sure they are great cars, they're just not W116s...)

Also for the first time the height adjustment works! In fact, pending tonights leak-down test, I should be able to report the system is finally* leak-free and working as MB intended.

* "finally" not really being the best word I could think of to describe the suspension. Those who drive high-milage 6.9s daily know that sooner or later, something will go pear shaped with the suspension...

Got the strut today Des, thanks.

Good new mate, that's excellent,

sounds like you and any other 6.9 owner should stockpile parts like pumps when you get the chance.

I think when I had the 6.9 I was quoted like $1600 for a new pump, can only imagine they have gone up more now.

You should be grateful God created 126s in abundance and plentiful in wrecking yards....:p

Good news Ian...
Happy for you mate...;)

24+ hours down and no issues whatsoever.

No sinking
No warning light
No fluid leaks on my garage floor from the LH front
Height adjuster works a treat
Magic carpet ride 6.9s are known for is back

So its taken two owners, 3 years, and a not insignificant amount of money (though still much less than if we'd replaced parts with brand new ones) to finally fix the suspension problems.

My mechanic still loves the car and reckons the 116, 123, and 126 still represent the best cars to own if you can't afford a brand new MB with factory warranty. This from a guy who owns two W140s. He's been doing a lot of work on customer's W140s these days and says even for mundane things which only cost a couple hundred dollars to fix on a 116/123/126 easily costs over a grand on a W140... after working on late model cars all week and being quoted obscene amounts for parts and having to break the bad news back to customers, working on a 116 is like being back in trade-school (they were the most popular model when he was doing his MB training) and the results usually immediate and impressive. He also likes the amount of cheap parts available from wreckers for 116/126... there's just not a large amount of W140/W220 being wrecked so even owners who would go the recycling route and buy a part from a wreckers find even those parts hard to find or overpriced.

Occasionally when we have to put down decent $ for a new part we kinda think of the car as a bit of a nuisence, but really, we 116 owners proabably have it the best of all the MB models at the moment.

Hi B13, yes to some of your remarks, no to others. Obviously, I think it is absolutely fantastic news regarding your 6.9 and how a replacement pump seems to have solved all of your problems - I presume that is the part that was replaced.

We are indeed lucky that 116 parts, from dismantlers, have been in good supply but, conversely, that situation is changing slowly but surely. There has to be an end to cheap 116's being bought, and also others going to the wreckers. But the numbers are falling and there really aren't too many models after the 116 that are, or have found, their way to the wreckers. So, once you again rely on spare parts from the parent company, running and repair costs are going to increase considerably. You know, take the trigger lead as an example (Referred to in another thread) the cost of which is really quite disgusting. Regards Styria

Great to hear the bismark is operational again my friend!!

Spot on about the cheapies that found their way to wreckers.. so many usefull parts, still on them even if they're pronounced DOA. That's cause MB made them..
Thank god for German efficiency........

You have been a bit quiet lately Ian

How is VMB690 holding up now?

Did the replacement pump fix your issues?

Are the rumours true you had to take out a second mortgage to re-fill the fuel tank?

Yeah I'm quiet because I feel like a bit of a tool lately... the success was shortlived, while driving home from work on the 3rd day the warning light came back on and hasn't gone off since... Height adjustment has also stopped working, though the car still feels nice and comfortale, and doesn't sink at night, so somethings better...

Today we were moving offices and so I piled my car full of computer equipment and books/manuals etc. which, as I would expect, sunk the back down and after starting the engine and expecting the old girl to level-out she didn't... I delivered my stuff and after unpacking the car regained most of its rear height but still looked a little on the low side, but perfectly drivable...

So at this stage I'm not sure where to proceed to next, as I don't want to de-pressurise the system in case it doesn't want to lift again, and need towing to the specialist.

I'm just driving it as it is at the moment.

Ian it sounds like a lack of pressure again.

Check the fluid level. Then bleed the pump again. I say this because its difficult to get the low pressure feeder to seal on the pump sometimes. I know that when I first got trusty rusty going, each night air would seep into the low pressure side, the fluid would drian back away from the pump far enough that it couldn't self prime.

Ok will do... I was just thinking though if there was an air leak at the inlet side of the pump would there be much of a leakage visable? There is no leakage that I can see on the floor of my garage, you see...

I suppose if the fluid drains back to the tank when the engine is switched off then there's hardly any at the junction at the inlet side of the pump to leak out and be visible.

Ian.
