How would one know that the car is fitted with it?

The easiest way to tell when looking at cars for sale online is to look at the instrument cluster as there is an indicator in the speedometer that lights up when the system activates.



in the photo above you can see that indicator (square) above the odometer.

For when they show the whole cluster like this one, you can see ASR light bottom right.

of course, this assumes the car has not had a cluster change.

Well explained Bryce.
The other think about ASR in a late W126 is that they are very high geared and it’s difficult the spin the wheels , even on hard throttle in the wet they have amazing traction. The only place it’s really useful on a 126 is snow and ice.

Good evening gents very interesting info about the 420SE and the ASR.

I have been as a passenger in a 1991 420SE I did notice the yellow ASR light displayed whilst in motion.

If the ASR light is displayed you probably won’t be in motion

I think you've posted photos of your instrument cluster and I don't recall the ASR warning lights.

I checked my W126 brochure for Aussie specs. Its a march 1989 brochure and it lists ASR as an option on the 300SE and SEL, but i've personally only ever seen it on 420s and 560s and most commonly on 560s. To be honest, I don't know why you would specify it on the 300 motor.

At least in the United states, it was standard on the 560 for 1991 model year.

Looking at some price lists for the german market, a 300SE base model was around 60,000DM, and a 560SEL was around 125,000DM. ASR is listed as a 2900DM option, so probably more appealing to the 560 buyer....

My 1989 300SE did cost $130,000 when new.

Going back and looking at the pics of the cluster my car does not have ASR.

But the car does have SRS and ABS.

Looks like a decent car. Price is not cheap, but probably not out of the range of one of these cars. Car is clearly not perfect but looks like a nice driver.

Hi Bryce I have seen that 280SE 3.5 on eBay not a bad looking car.

Maybe it’s just me but would painted hubcaps suit that car better than the alloys and is the paintwork a little dull?
