Interesting. I have basically the same gearbox in my 250SE (but not as strong). I don't have an issue with a lack of converter, I just don't like the ratios in the box. This is my main beef with Mercedes transmissions from the 60s to the 90s, in that the first gear is a stump puller, so they start in second and function like a three speed.
Taking into account the rear end, the ratios for the box are:
15.6
9.88
6.19
3.92
This gives the following speeds at 3,000 RPM:
24.6
38.7
61.8
97.5
As you can see, you're turning around 3,800 RPM on the motorway.
The engine is a very revvy unit, so the ratios shouldn't be too tall, but were I selecting them I would go with something like
12.5
8.5
5.5
3.3
with a first gear start.
