Gents,
I went and checked out the W140 S600 today.

I have to say, this is a nice car.
Interior an easy 9/10
Exterior 8.5/10
Under bonnet 9.5/10
Boot interior, tools and spare 4/10
Log books still in it, been very well maintained.
Amazing triple seal door rubbers and double glazing.
Glass sun roof has a slight issue.

She runs sweet as a nut, but couldn’t drive it today as no trade plate available.

She is a big car and visually huge compared to the W126 560SEL
Makes the W220 look like a C class.

I will be going back to drive it.

How did you enjoy the S280 Motec?

If I can’t drive it extensively, I will walk away from it.

A drive around the block is just not going to cut it for such a complex car.

For the W140, many years (earlier in production) suffer from wiring harness problems. You'll want to make sure somebody else has replaced it. From memory it was through 96 but don't quote me on that.

Also A/C evaporators are problematic and the weight of the cars mean they go through front suspension components pretty quickly. ideally this has all been done.

Test plugs on wiring loom if supple in engine bay it means replaced with updated loom. And series 2 which is 96 onwards doesn't have bio loom or evap problems. Easy way to tell was more rounded bumpers 5 speed automatic same climate control on dash as W210 and post removed from rear quarters as now sensor fitted. Factory sound system is great and they are extremely quiet inside. More than any other S class.

The lack of converter in the gearbox never endeared me to the model :rolleyes:

Interesting. I have basically the same gearbox in my 250SE (but not as strong). I don't have an issue with a lack of converter, I just don't like the ratios in the box. This is my main beef with Mercedes transmissions from the 60s to the 90s, in that the first gear is a stump puller, so they start in second and function like a three speed.

Taking into account the rear end, the ratios for the box are:
15.6
9.88
6.19
3.92

This gives the following speeds at 3,000 RPM:

24.6
38.7
61.8
97.5

As you can see, you're turning around 3,800 RPM on the motorway.

The engine is a very revvy unit, so the ratios shouldn't be too tall, but were I selecting them I would go with something like

12.5
8.5
5.5
3.3

with a first gear start.
