    6.9 exhaust

I would think that the 350, 450 and 6.9 might likely all use the same middle silencer anyway. I only have one set of flanges - over the rear axle. I had originally intended to take your advice and have another set near the gearbox somewhere, but I was talked out of it on clearance reasons...

    6.9 exhaust

THE COST : All-up, the equivalent of about US$ 370 including the custom silcencer fabrication. Nice.

    6.9 exhaust

THE VERDICT : I'm very happy with the large standard size silencers. The final outlet is a pair of polished 63mm pipes. Sound is deep but subtle at idle, and is almost dead quiet above 1500rpm - as with the standard system. Interestingly, no real performance difference that I can tell...

THE INSTALLATION THis week I received the custom silencers, and had the system built. Very nice, thank you.

    6.9 exhaust

THE DESIGN : Trusty rusty has for some time run with the original spec 6.9 exhaust borrowed from the red car. The time had come for trusty rusty to get its own system now. I did detailed measurements and design, and I provide them here for anyone else who may be interested. Some...

    unusual and messy instrument failure

Well, when I bought my 280SE back in 1997, it was aparent that there was some 'sweating' visible around the oil pressure indicator needle in the combination gauge. At that time I was ignorant about the 'live' pressure gauge behind there, and didn't think anything of it. Over the next few...

AUxiliary electric blower fan - where's the relay?

The electric blower fan in front of th radiator has quit on my 280SE. Yesterday I got to investigating, and found that the fan works when given a direct supply from the battery. The cabling all appears in tact. The 100 degree switch is good too. I established that it must be relay...

bodywork progress on the W124 AMG3.6

This is the car I'm sorting out for a colleague. The right rear quarter had a couple of nasty dents where his wife had backed up against a tree. THis is how it looked originally - its not a great photo - unfortunately the best I have - what it doesn't show is that there were a series of...

    Paintless dent removal

THis is a topic that gets talked about a lot. Some of the more hyped methods are dry ice or similar, suction cups but I'm somewhat skeptical of these. Perhaps the most widely used in the trade, and what is usually referred to as PDR (Paintless dent removal) is the use of various levers...

Att Lukas : ceiling trim removal

HI Lukas, I was looking back at your old thread : http://topklasse.org/forums/showthread.php?t=655 Could you please fix the photo links? I think this is a valuable resource, that will be useful to many of us. I for one need to remove this trim tomorrow on the 280SE and trusty rusty - long...

    W140

Nice pictures Des, but very cruel - I'm crying. I will definately own another W140 - ideally a black on black 600 LWB for occasional use, and a 320 SWB for daily use. I seriously want a black on black pre-facelift LWB 600 with chromed exahust tips, black windows, black wheels with polished...

    Refurbishing aircleaners

At the last meeting of the MB owners club here, I showed off trusty rusty. There was a fair bit of interest in the aircleaner that I refurbished. I have now done some R107-M117 aircleaners for members : (excuse my grubby finger-prints on the finished article) Re-zinc-ed clips, new felt...

    Progress on the 300TE AMG3.6

NOw the fuel system is an interesting one. THis car had suffered from fuel starvation issues when it last ran. We have discovered that the fuel tank (wagon specific - mounted below the load-bin floor), is crushed on its upper side. It appears it was swapped with one from another car (ie the...

    Progress on the 300TE AMG3.6

The 17" AMG splits go in next week for refurbishing. Three of them are really not bad, but the 4th one has a bodged prior repair. Really poor. After that, some nice Bridgestone Potenza 235/45ZR17's are coming......yummy.

    Progress on the 300TE AMG3.6

I'm also replacing brake flex hoses, and bleeding out the system. The exhaust is rotten - very. Its being replaced with a custom big bore system. I'm just concerned about the tips - the drooping pair of ovals is such a trade mark of the W124 AMG's, that anything else would be just WRONG.

    Progress on the 300TE AMG3.6

The alternator was screwed, so I procured and then fitted this item of beauty : Other work has begun in the engine bay. The old battery had leaked out and made a hell of a mess. I'm stripping, cleaning and repainting in there. The battery tray has been blasted and powder coated.

    Progress on the 300TE AMG3.6

Well, this is what's been keeping me out of mischief, and away from the W116's : This car came to me with a variety of problems. It has been in a front end accident, but aside from that there are some cosmetic issues as well : I've started on the dent in the rear quarter, and I sourced...

    Driving the 6.9 daily

Well, the 280SE is on stands this week awaiting new rear disks (sorry styria - I purchased locally - I think importing from you would be too heavy on the postage). While the car is off the road, I'm refurb-ing the air cleaner housing - pics to follow. So all week I've been using trusty rusty...
