    W140 driveline/transmission issues

Thanks for the help styria. Thoroughness would be to change both flex disks and the centre bearing, buy W140 components are a little dear, and my instinctive judgement tells me the centre bearing is OK. The front flex disk was a real shock to see. It has bunches of cords sticking out, and...

    W140 driveline/transmission issues

My W140 500SEL ('92) is an early version with the basic 4 speed torque converter tranny. It seems similar to 70's and 80's benz transmissions in design. It is not slipping at all, in fact the gear changes are a little hard if anything. Recently is has developed a tendency to 'shudder' as it...

    116 parts for sale

I'm listing the prices in South African Rands since I think shipping will make it prohibitive for overseas purchasers. 2 x 280SE/280S radiators : fair condition, will need resoldering, R200 each 280S differential, good condition, R 750 (I think it is a 1:3.98) W116 bonnet : good condition, R...

    ABS on your W116?

From my experience I can make the following comments : a) the 6.9 ABS limited slip diff is not the same as the non-ABS 6.9 LSD. The ABS unit has speed sensors. b) the front hub carriers differ on the ABS cars - again they have ports for speed sensors.

    6.9 flex disc

A well known issue...... I thought I must add, in relation to the thread on 6.9 valve timing and performance, that I have not yet driven either 6.9 more than 20km per occasion - I seem to spend so much time working on the cars I'm usually too tired to drive them. Well there is more to it than...

    6.9 valve timing sorted out

styria, yes trusty rusty's engine is more lusty, and I did check the chain stretch. It is the original chain, and the right hand cam is 2 degrees too early. What I take this to mean is that the chain actually has 16 degrees of stretch, and the sprocket has been advanced by one tooth...

    Polishing machines

When I was young, I was very dilligent about waxing my Ford every month. Recently I have finally admitted that I have too little time and too many cars to wax by manual power anymore. The time has come to buy a polishing machine - I'm not talking about compounding/cutting type of polishing...

    6.9 valve timing sorted out

My 6.9 AMG had a valve timing error of about 9.5 degrees at the right hand camshaft. Last weekend I fitted a new chain and tensioner, and found that the error had come down to about 4 degrees (of crank) - based on the angle at which 2mm of intake valve lift is achieved on cyl 1 and 6. Not...

6.9 chain tensioner replacement vs rebuilding

I bought one 6.9 chain and tensioner which I fitted to the AMG. The tensioner in particular was rather expensive. I'm now faced with repeating this job on trusty rusty. I have stripped and examined the old tensioner that came off the AMG and I really cant see any reason not to reuse it. In...

    6.9 sump removal

Well for the curious, this is what the oil tank looked like when it came out : This is what the timing case area looks like. Really sad.

    6.9 sump removal

The state of trusty rusty's oil tank and euro oil cooler has left me desiring to remove the sump to flush it out properly. The amount of rubbish that came out of the oil system leads me to suspect the oil pump pickup gauze may well be clogged, and my thoroughness won't allow me to proceed...
