A little while ago Styria commented on a “Car Of The Week” thread about the misalignment and poor quality of the glove box on a later model car a W220 or C215 or later if memory serves me correctly.

My W220 was suffering the same issue, of a sagged left hand side of the glove box lid, but could be pushed up when locked for the alignment to be correct.

So while I had the glove box out.

I saw this
Which is a twin fine tooth adjustment for the left hand hinge.

This wedge was removed for some reason and was not replaced.
I adjusted the height correctly and re inserted the wedge in between the tooth adjustment, which keeps the teeth firmly engaged.

Number 4 is the part in question.
Number 6 has the teeth on it, and the glovebox body has a spring loaded set of teeth the mate with these.

In case anyone is wondering what number 140 below is.
It is a pen holder that is inside the glove box lid you click open when the glove box lid drops down.

Hi Michel,
Yes it worked perfectly.

I don’t know why people would disturb these wedges, maybe they think they need to be removed to access the cabin filter, but the glove box is just held in with 4 screws. The wedges are purely for adjustment.

Between your posts and Ant’s enthusiasm, you’ve re-ignited my passion for that model.
Would you know if there was much difference between the S430 and the S500 (obviously besides the engine).

My understanding was that MB Australia never imported a short wheelbase 500. You could get the 430 in short or long, but the 500 and 600 were only imported in LWB form.

the 600 had some special interior appointments unique to that model, but I seem to recall you could spec up a 430 with any of the options that came standard on the 500. Its probably just that few did because by the time you add them all you might as well go for the 500.

For example the heated front seats were standard on the 500 and optional on the 430. I think other stuff like leather wheel and so on was the same.

You are spot on Bryce.
What was optional on the 430 was pretty much standard on the 500.
Saying that this 430 is pretty well loaded. I understand the speed limiting function was optional on mine (which is fitted) but standard on the S500.
The rear head rests can drop on mine via a switch, but the 500 could also be stood back up via a switch, where mine has to be done manually.
Stuff like that.
Anthony mentioned a few other things as well on his S500.

Like Michel, I really like the colour combo.

I will hopefully have the car finished in the next few weeks and have it for sale.
Anyone is more than welcome to take her for a spin when she is done.

Patrick, as you know, I always admired that car. I just love the light interior, which makes such a welcome change from the everyday black or grey so prevalent nowadays. The misalignment you refer to relates to the W116s. Unfortunately, with that model, it is the timber part that has the "fake" timber glued to it, that actually develops a warp, and even a separate piece of genuine timber is not able to prevent that from happening. There is some adjustment, but not really good enough to rectify the misalignment. Regards Styria
