This is the sort of thing I’ve done regarding Titanic, her sisters and the parent company over the years.
You get into that detective work as Styria rightly calls it and it can be a lifetimes research.
It’s this detective work, that can then make you somewhat of a specialist in this field.

The brochure as part of the media pack which was available on the day. There were some Polaroids taken but the official pix were later processed, approved by MBA & sent out to various interested parties. I’m not sure how they determined who received the pix or how they were sent. Obviously it was back in the good ol days when quality pix were not immediately available. I guess it worked better for MBA, so they could have more control on what was released to the media.

Well my friends, yesterday I found the Holy Grail of my quest & I’m now approaching the end of my journey for the last decade! Re-discovered in the shed of the retired policeman from Riddells Creek, Ian Goss.
These photographs are far better quality than the last set so I intend to professionally copy & enlarge at least a couple to get framed.
In true and likely unintentional fashion, they almost replicated what some journalists did 7 years prior when the 1971 Ford XY GTHO was released. Only this wasn’t achieved on the well developed Hume Hwy. This was a true 212kmh along Sutherlands Rd which was barely a sealed goat track at the time.
Note that there was 5 people in the car and it wasn’t as fast as she could go.... The photographer in the car was Kerry Patton from the Gisborne Telegraph who got out of the car uncontrollably shaking from a combination of excitement & fear!

More info from Ian including a temporary MB sign he souvenir(ed) which was used by the marshalls on the ‘closed’ road. Seems they did encounter other motorists on the circuit, which could indicate many locals were unaware of the event.

This was found proudly displayed at the historic ‘Poltons’ garage, which is still in operation today. Poltons is only a few blocks away from the St Johns Anglican Parish in Riddells Creek which was the centre of ‘operations’ for the morning. Behind the wheel of the $36M Silver Arrow is John (Jack) Poulton Snr, who I’m told was also the Mayor at the time.

St Johns as it appears today... This was where the event was based for the morning and church staff provided morning tea & refreshments. Note that 2 race cars were trucked to the location, plus the marquee. Media were transported by bus, but I’m unsure how Fangio & his interpreter arrived on site. Perhaps they drove the 6.9 out from the Lanes dealer in South Melbourne.
Lunch was at the previously mentioned Emu Bottom in Sunbury.

Lastly (for now) here’s a couple of articles from the Gisborne & Macedon Telegraph; huge thanks to Ken & Kerry Patton who were running the publication for many years. The articles were published quite a few days later since the event was held too close to the previous publication deadline. Note the original docs are bound in a huge folder which is rather difficult to separate, so some of the text is unfortunately obscured. It may be I can source complete copies from the national archives in Canberra who were required to keep copies of many publications.

Oh I find it also interesting that the 6.9 cost $68505AUD in 1978, which was about double the cost of the average home. Being that the average price of a home in Melbourne is now $750000AUD, that would put the relative price of a 6.9 at $1.5M today!
So a new S Class in today’s relative terms is actually VERY cheap!! I might have to tell that to my bank manager & see how that goes....
