    Dismantling a 450SE

Hi all, Long story. Basically, I bought a 450SE I shouldn't have a while ago, but it was cheap (initially), etc. Have been wanting to post about that for a while and still do, but in the interim..... That 450 needed a new bumper amongst other things. An ad came through the local MB club...

    Hubcap question?

I would suggest that they won't - hupcaps are usually fitted to steel rimmed wheels, and as Oversize says the Bundts would have the protruding centre cap, thicker edges, different profile, etc. Note that this is my theory only, have never actually tried it. Sample:

    Radiator Fan Clutch

Predictably, I've been playing with this after I pulled it out in preparation for turning the engine. Observations: The clutch is initially quite stiff, but you can turn the fan independently of the clutch with a little effort If you do turn the fan independently of the clutch, the clutch...

    Starter Re-Assembly

OK, got organised. Below is the exploded view of the starter. And here is the view looking down inside the stator: The brushes are the 4 shiny rectangular things around the round shiny thing in the centre (which is the hole the end of the shaft passes through). From the top photo you can...

    Starter Re-Assembly

Can you see a pattern here? :( Okay, so I pulled the starter apart, cleaned it and re-greased the greasy bits. Everything seems in order mechanically and there is plenty of life left in the brushes. Come re-assembly time, the question arises: how do I "restrain" the 4 brushes so I can...

    Water Pump Flow Rate

Ah, the thermostat does that. My method was the same as the first part of Mark's post, namely: 1) Disconnect top and bottom radiator hose 2) Flush radiator from both ends and via surge tank (try flushing engine, no dice) 3) Reconnect bottom hose 4) Refill system with water 5) Flush engine...

    Water Pump Flow Rate

Hi all, I recently drained the cooling system of a 450, and was able to flush both the radiator and the engine with a garden hose. This is after disconnecting the top and bottom radiator hoses, then adding water in either direction at the top opening. When I tried this with a 6.9, I couldn't...

    Turning the Engine

Hi all, Numpty question: what's the best way to turn the engine (by hand, clockwise)? I'm thinking a socket on the big nut on the front of the crank. Specifically - what size is that big nut? Radiator fan and ancillaries are removed. Ta Lukas

    Spinning Starter Motor

Hi all, 6.9 #1 has a long-term issue where the start motor will sometimes spin but not crank the engine. "Remedy" at present is to simply retry starting, at which point it will either crank correctly or the above will happen again. Happens at most 3 times in a row. I can't figure out any trends...

    Removing Adhesive from Painted Panels

Hi all, A piece of side molding / rub strip was falling off the Conformadore, so I've pulled it off to clean up the surfaces and then stick it back on (this being a lesser car, they used double-sided tape rather than clips). The original was double sided tape, and it's left some residue behind...

14 Inch Intra Bundts and Wheel Cleaning

After getting the Bundts of the parts car removed from the car, and then having the tyres stripped, I discovered that there are 2 variations on these wheels - early and late presumably. From the front: No visible difference, except that the "Made in West Germany" font is larger and better...
