After removing some cosmetic pieces I started to realize the vulnerability of a W116 to serious engine damage if one was a careless driver. Even a gutter, kerb, or speed hump poses a threat. Especially to a 6.9 that's a little lower than standard. Even worse when parking bays are becoming smaller and you have to drive deeper into the bay, so the rear doesn't hang out. I've also seen several speed humps and gutters far higher than normal. Note that the front crossmember is directly behind the bumper, so anything below that is completely at the mercy of your care(ful/less) driving...
The arrows show the engine sump and the lower tanks of the radiator and engine oil cooler on Blue Flame (my Euro 6.9). As a result of this, I'm considering custom sump guards on all my MBs.
