Hi from Jim (Jimb).
I usually don't listen to anything .On a long trip I do sometimes.
If you want time to consider your options and still listen to your mp3 device I have a simple solution. In most cases the audio side of your cassette player is usually OK and it's failure is due to the tape drive . I have a device that is a dummy cassette that slips into your cassette player.it has a cable with a lead with the standard stereo jack plug on the end of it .it inductively couples the audio from your device into the play back head of your tape deck.
it is new. I bought a couple . you can have one for free just send me your postal address and it is yours. it might give you some time to consider your options.
Kind regards Jim .I

Anyone wondering why the w140 has such a good sound system... The surprisingly small drivers are fitted to Bose tuned plastic enclosures which are ported at the bottom. Presumably they calculated the correct enclosure size and ports for the drivers along with port length? Not that different to the Wave Radios with very long port runners... I’m thinking this approach could be adopted to a W116...

Thinking i will do a Blue tooth conversion on my Becker Mexico and fit decent speakers like Focal into original locations . Plus a powered sub under front seats from Focal and I do have an outstanding 4 channel amplifier I can replace the small Becker one with as Becker only has 1 line out to amp the 4 channel would then provide signal to powered sub or subs. Amp is a Butler Tube driver as in its a 75x4 Valve amp

If any of you have removed the original radio from a W116 Mercedes, down the track I may be interested in buying it from you. I may be able to repair it if it is non operational.
I would add an audio input to take an mp3 player (phone or whatever)
I am saying down the track because I will have a better idea what I am going to do with this car after tomorrow. The automatic transmission has some issues and a recently retired Mercedes specialist is giving it a service tomorrow. I was well aware of the problem before I got the car so this is not something I was unaware of. If it shapes up ok I will press onward.
So I will see what happens. The current radio in it is out of a later model and is not connected. If I am going to mess around with it I would prefer an original unit. There does not appear to be a cradel. It kind of slides in. There seems to be a metal piece behind the radio and I think it must recess into this, as it appears to be quite well held when in position.
I am aware these radios are A. M. Only. I actually restore old valve radios, my background is electronics now unfortunately mostly old school. I hate all this large scale integration stuff and surface mounted components. I was repairing some of this stuff before I retired, however I have the shakes badly now and can't go near it.
Kind regards Jimb.

Having a USB input would be of great value and enhance the usefulness of an older unit. I agree that the look of many new units is tacky at best compared to the OEM stuff which by comparison are drab and boring (one extreme to the other).

In my daily car I’m using a Kenwood double DIN unit with CarPlay and using my phone for GPS data. Honestly I wouldn’t be without it now. I just signed up to Spotify and so far it’s been great. Certainly far better than radio with its poor reception. Analog isn’t great and DAB+ is just awful. The concept is good but it hasn't been implemented well (anyone remember AM stereo)? Compression is a flawed idea and the signal doesn’t suit a moving car at all.

Here’s another W126 door card that has the factory sound system upgrade. Pity we never got them in Australia. It doesn’t seem an ideal location to me since the mid range speaker is firing at the side of the seat base:

Wow, I never knew we didn't get that here. The only W126 I ever owned was in the USA, and given it was a 560 it had the upgraded audio as standard. The system was not all functional but much better than the standard one. I think there were amps behind the rear seat, but its a long time since I owned that car.
