I’ve been thinking about getting a W126.
Don’t ask me why, I think they’re gorgeous and are the most classic looking Benz ever.
I did own two at one stage - a 280SE and a 560SEL.
Obviously the 560 SEL would have to be the ultimate as it ticked all the boxes while the 280 did absolutely nothing for me. 🥺
I would like your (honest and unbiased) opinions on the 300 vs the 380 and the 420…

I wrote a buyers guide here which covers some stuff:

What is your budget? That would have a big impact.

The 280 didn't fare well with the ADR regulations, so aussie ones don't like to rev. That is a problem as the M110 needs to rev, and so I would only consider a 280 if its a south african import. Apparently the 84 and 85 models are better, but I have no experience with those.

The 380 is a pretty good deal if you need a V8 and you don't want to pay 560 money. They are half the cost of a 420, and the 420 is not twice the car. Personally I would go with a 380SE if I could find one, the SWB versions are nicer to drive and the 380 came in both. Imports have more power if you can find one, but the aussie ones can be tuned up to have more power. Performance is pretty similar to the W116 450, although its less torque and more revs. Performance is not bad because of the 3.27 rear end. The v8's are pretty costly to run though, as most 380s have deferred maintenance as they are not worth a great deal and will need timing chain, guides, etc, and best case valve stem seals and worst case valve guides.

300 is probably the best value of the W126 range, feels much more sprightly than the 420 around town and the engine is the most modern. The M103 needs head gaskets, so its good to find one that is done. The early ones are more spartan, the later ones are quite optioned up. Very different character.

420 is good if you want a freeway cruiser. They are great for that with their 2.47 rear end. Personally I find them a bit sluggish around town, the 300 feels more 'alive'. The 420 is better fuel consumption than any of them, even the 300. Best year is 89, with the slightly improved interior. Avoid 90 and 91 models as the ASR is full of NLA parts. the 420SE would be the best, but they were only offered in 90 and 91, so you want an import if you desire a 420SE, otherwise get an SEL from a prior year. They were well optioned so not too much difference from a 560 other than power of course and the anti-squat, anti-dive. Same maintenance cost as the 380, but less deferred maintenance. If you want a pristine example 420 is the easiest model to find it in as many were sold privately to well to do buyers, vs the 560s that were often company vehicles.

If it were me, 560 is the only way to go.
Obviously, I agree, but the days of inexpensive 560s are now well behind us. SEL and SEC.

For example, there was a 560 on auction this week, with a shoddy paint job, badly fitted series 1 dash and average condition - but with low miles and some history that sold for $16k plus premium. '

I'm glad I bought my 560s and I plan to hang onto them long term.

I would say a decent driver 560SEL is a $20-25k car now and a decent driver 560SEC is a $30-40k car now.

I agree Pat, especially after owning one …
Time will tell and obviously depending on what I find 🙄

I think that C107s assessment and experience with the W126 is "Golden". Plenty of hands on experience with his two cars, but one should bear in mind that he puts a lot of personal mechanical restoration into his cars, and he does not shy away from placing the cars in the hands of experienced Mercedes Mechanics. The combination of both provide for satisfactory and desirable ownership.

My experience with the W126 range relates to a 420SEL (I think), a beautifully comfortable car to drive and ride in, but badly lacking in power. I do not know the reason why. There was one aspect that always intrigued my - when I would come to start the car, you could never hear the Starter Motor turning over -the moment I would turn the key, the engine always fired immediately as if being started by an Electric Motor. Maybe it was just completely devoid of engine compression - I simply don't know, and in the end it succumbed to the dreaded timing chain guide breakage. Oversize became the new Custodian of the car. It would seem that I am destined to be the custodian of stray 300SE's evermore.
Just when I start thinking about selling my current 300SE, an opportunity to buy a one owner, immaculate 300SE with 260k km's on the clock in metallic blue with mushroom leather interior, full service history & just a great, original example for almost nothing has presented itself to me.
I mean this car is so cheap, I could buy it, sell the wheels and still be in the black!

Need pics!
Soon Bryce, when it's in my garage.
It certainly is not a gem, but has huge potential and the price was more than right.
The colours are Silver Blue paint with Grey leather interior.
It's going to need a few bits and pieces, but I don't think I'll struggle.
