Ohhh that looks like a big can of worms! Looks like it's seen plenty of salt in Europe and has been left to RIP in a paddock somewhere?

Sadly that's called an 'RB'- rust bucket!

Family Friend of ours bought a W107 years ago paid top dollar then he find out the the car was full of rust!
:eek::mad:

Someone forget to have a P.P.I- pre-purchase inspection carried out before hand.

That SL looks like its been underwater. Imagine how much rust there is in the chassis rails , floor pan etc. Is it worth repairing ?

I don't know about this one, Helmet, but a few years ago we cut out rust on an SLC that cost the guy five grand. It was bad, but the owner insisted that he wanted to restore out of consideration to his wife who had serious eye problems. So we also resprayed it, and fitted a new interior.

After all that, and all that money, the car went back to Bondi to be parked in the street, although the owner was negotiating to rent some form of garage. Regards Styria

I think some perspective is called for here........

38k for rust work on a Valiant not including paint....

Sills, rear 1/4's, both front guards, complete plenum top middle and firewall, complete floor pan and turret repairs which called for the turret to be unpicked and removed.

Oh and the right hand chassis rail and A pillar, Rear scuttle below the rear window and wheel well in the boot.

The 107 is a doddle and in my opinion far more worthy.

have a hard time swallowing the story?

Having had a good look around at what replacement panels are actually available for Mercedes I reckon you could rebuild a car with the fine products available and although expensive they are available and actually fir with a minimum of massaging needed.

Although there are a fair few replacement panels available for Aussie cars very few actually fit and often lack radius's or curves the original skins had not to mention being made of far inferior quality and gauge steel where a patch or section should be say 1.6mm (Sills) they can be as light as 0.8 and often a fair way off correct.

Probably why im not unhappy with a bit of rust on a 3 point star.

Something else I noticed was that the excellent manufacturing techniques make Benz's a joy to disassemble a donor car and just as easy to re fit once you scrap the paint and skimcoat off.

Personally? Id suggest that rust work on a Mercedes would actually take less time for a better result (No tweaks etc)

Hi Tony by the first photo i take it the car is an RT charger and if so the sale price means the cost can be recovered. Where unfortunately on a mercedes that is not the case in most cases  But great work all the same and remember MOKING IS NOT A WEALTH HAZARD :D

Sadly the high prices for E49's and E38 Chugga's are long gone Motec, I know of another car that had well in excess of 70k spent on it and the particular car also has race history and solid provenance which (I believe) still resides in the unsold sheet of AMC.

You will see high priced examples at a tad over 130k but having followed this particular market for 10 odd years I can tell you with confidence that very few are sold at or near the asking.

The market has once again fallen back to sane pricing.

HEY TONY

IMPRESSIVE body work on that car ( which i donno the make) really work of masters

REGARDS

TAREK

Thanks Tarek, the work is not my own though but more the work of 2 friends I used to spend time with lending my particular expertise and learning while at the same time acquiring metalworking skills.

The car was an early 70's Chrysler, the Model is called a Charger and this particular unit is an R/T model known as an E49. 6 cylinder 265 Hemi (Not a true Hemi engne BTW) with 3 x side draught webber carbs.

Note that this car was only ever made in Australia and sold in Australia, South Africa, New Zealand and a few small pacific nations such as Fiji.

A fun car to drive in moderate weather but a real handful in wet weather due to its short wheelbase.
