Our Newly Acquired W116

4 months now we owned this beautiful 1979 450SE with 281,000kms came with the complete books and has the nice leather options and a sunroof the Silver Green and Brown Tan leather interior was really a eye catcher.

I did buy the car sight unseen but put all my trust in friends from the MBCNSW & MBCVIC there knowledge which got me this stunning example.

I'm the Third owner the second owner had it only for 5 months and original lady had new with all books service at Mercedes in Victoria the car represents well for its age.

I've just done a few extra work to lift it up as it sat unregistered since 2014. I've replaced the following:

Timing chain, Hoses & Belts, Coolant, Oil, Rebuilt brake system, fuel hose & filter, spark plugs, rear parcel I've redyed with a rattle can. Sunroof was seized but the mechanic fixed it now works like a dream good option to have. The transmission been serviced.

I'm not a fan of the chrome arches, mudflaps and tow bar I like my cars original as possible all was removed, the windscreen rubbers front & back I've replaced and boot seal. I managed to find a rebuilt Becker Europa stereo not the correct one but looks good needs to be connected.

Next work I need to do is replacing the front shocks, service the K-jet, connecting the radio and getting the heater core repair with the AC working again for another summer,

Mostly I'm driving the car so all those work can be completed mid year just a very slow progress while planning my move to North Brisbane,

I can vouch for this being a nice car, I've driven it. At one of the MBCNSW night drives late last year, I had my 280SE and James had his 450SE, so we swapped cars for a leg of the run. was interesting to drive the two cars back to back. They are only a few months apart, both 79 models.

As you would expect the 450 is a lot more powerful, but the engines have a totally different character. the 280 loves to rev and has a 6500 redline to prove it. The 450 has mountains of torque and does its best work down low. Both make a good sound, the 450 has a nice, subtle v8 rumble and the 280 comes alive at higher revs where you can really hear the twin cam six in its power band.

The starting torque compensation and anti-dive suspension are nice features the 450 has that make it feel like a very stately experience. The 280 is a bit lighter up front and is a little more eager to corner. The leather seats in the 450 are nicer on a hot day than the tex, although the 280 has a rebuilt drivers seat so its a little more comfortable.

overall both great cars but the 450 has the edge with that extra power when you need it.

Thanks mate, I'm glad to drive the 280 M110 brought back memories, the 280SE engines along the straight very comfortable cabin thanks slot and a good example mate
