Is it not still the case that Fuel is blended for Volatility as the Seasons change ?
low volatility Petrol bought in high Summer and still there in the dead of Winter
in its self, would add to this problem.
On a practical note on Petrol.... about 20 years ago I was trying to get my 1913 ohv inlet & side exhaust 500cc 5/1 comp. Rudge to perform better ( propertly ) Head & Barrel were integral, so no compression increase possible. Valve time was on a veneer adjustment . Factory was 10degrees A .TDC for the inlet Valve
Then Setting to 10 Degrees B.TDC lost all the low power but top end was greatly improved. A compromise at TDC was ok. But the final solution was to use 98 Octane with more advance..... Result satisfaction. Just like our Turbo C Classes trial and error.

If ever there was truth in Fuel going off I had it yesterday
When first started out of the Box...it was instant.... fresh Fuel
As new Hyundai 4 stroke Mower absolutely refused to start without Either Spray.... Filled with fresh 98 Shell.... one quick Pull was all that was needed. Ignition is Electronic Fat Spark

Some motors seem more susceptible than others. My Jag being particularly sensitive, you really notice how much better it runs when the fuel is fresh. even 3 months old is degraded performance these days.
