Mark, not totally certain, but no Sunroof, no Cruise Control, also what is ADS (?) - I am not familiar with that term.

What are your plans for the car, Mark ? Are you wanting to sell any parts ? BTW, thanks for the pics. It just lends further credibility to TK as a site for the enthusiast with plenty of good information. Regards Styria

N.B. Forget the ADS bit - I did go back and checked out the designation and meaning of ......ah, what was it ? ASR ? Not looking again.

ASD - automatic locking differential

From what I've heard only 40 W126s were fitted with the split rear seat!! Pity the engine's completely shot.....

It does have a sunroof and cruise control. I'm using this one for parts. Like my 500SEL, the doors have been modified with side intrusion bars to meet the ADRs of the era

No I think you could then select the coverings including leather, suede, MB Tex, or Amaretta.

Yes I agree why wouldn’t you just buy a 560 & not have to add so many options?? Maybe the original owner had tax issues with the larger engines, or they just wanted to be very unique!!

I wonder then if they considered HPF?

You got me curious so I looked up the UK price list.

Price including tax for the 420SEL was 38,030.00. with all the options selected, this rose to 52,237.59
As a reference, a base 500SEL was 45850.00 and a 560SEL was 56400.00

So yes, almost 560 money and well above a base 500.

Had they added the full hyro, it would have taken it up to around 54,900. Had they taken the fridge too, it would have pushed it above 560 price! Full hydro and the fridge were about the only two expensive options they didn't take.

If I had to guess, the original owner never drove the car, but employed a driver, so wanted all the rear seat options for himself and didn't care about the engine size. Note he selected badge delete so people didn't see he didn't go for the 'whole hog'. May have even been owned by a company to drive the CEO or managing director around.

Just had another look, since many of these options were cheaper or included on the higher models, having a 500SEL with the same options actually wouldn't have been much more expensive.

A 500SEL so equipped would have been 55,263.47. About 3,000 pounds more.
a 560SEL so equipped would have been 61,271.10

The 500 actually seems like a pretty good deal really, as things like the Amaretta, metallic paint, A/C and so on were all standard or nil cost options.

Wow, wow - and has it all gone to waste ? I would be very much interested what parts, if any or many, are still gracing the hallowed abode of Mr. Oversize ? Did you ever keep the gearbox, differential and all the other goodies that this car was blessed with. Mark, I am still trying to work out the identity of your favourite, or everyday transport, that you may be using on a daily basis. Regards Styria

This car is a very unique unicorn but beyond getting back to service. In fact I was made to promise by the PO that it would never be re registered! Probably due to import issues or the like.

Anyway none of it will go to waste. Of particular value is the interior despite its current condition. Even the distributor additional sensor will be put to use on a different engine.

Personally if I could afford one of these cars back in the day & wanted all these options I would’ve gone with at least the 500.
