JR Ewing and his W116

With the Porsche laid up while I get the water pump reconditioned, I've been forced to drive the 6.9...and it's fabulous! Don't know if I can afford the fuel, though, so the Porsche needs to be mobile this weekend.

However, everytime I drive this car, I feel like JR Ewing - JR and his W116 made a huge impression on me as a youngster.

So now I have a question or two:

1) What W116 did JR drive?
2) That was some strong product placement for Mercedes...I wonder if they paid for this, or whether the prodcuers had to hire the cars. I once heard that Bollinger or Moet didn't sponsor a single bottle of champagne on 'Absolutely Fabulous'. Apparently the producers picked up the cost.

Always amusing to the luxury car community how JR Ewing drove one of the most fuel-efficient luxo-barges of its era.

He had 450SE 1st then a 280SE, in the eps where they abduct Bobby instead of JR the bad guys have slides of the cars, JR had a 280SE, Bobby had a 450SL and Sue Ellen had a Ford wagon, JR's Benzes were suppsed to be the colour of money. I havent caught up from season 3, but it and season 2 had him in a 280. I remember later seasons he graduated to 126's.
Hart to Hart, Dallas, Dynasty and Falcon Crest plus a few others all had product placement agreements, Hart to Hart didnt advertise it in the credits untill the 2nd season (450SL/380SL & a 300TD) Same with the likes of Rolls Royce, Bentley & Jaguar.

I wonder what made the producers choose a 280SE. It must be that all the interesting folks drive M110 engined W116s!!!

That's why race mine.. Helps with the 'interesting' factor. Prior to this, I was just a plain ol' person, racing people on the streets with a V8. Now i'm officially a V8 Race-car driver. At least that's what I tell chicks.

I guess now that I will be racing a 280S as well, it makes me Double cool?

I find the producers decision really interesting that JR should drive a Mercedes. One would think that his character would be better suited driving one of those awful Cadillacs of that period - it sort of ties in better with his gung-ho cowboy character. I wonder if JR influenced the Mercedes brand postively or negatively in the States....

Positive, not just in America too. there would be a few Thistle Green Benzes floating around. The other comment was that there was alot of the copies of the "Hart cars" i.e the SL, the wagon and I guess the Bentley/Rolls & Ferrari Dino.

Another little bit of "wow" The owner of South Fork is/was a 116 driver (300SD in silver) as well.

But then they all moved to RRs includind Krystal who drove a Corniche Conv and Joan Collins (Alexys) who was chauffeured in a Phantom V

Ne'er mind, Cam, I've never seen Dallas, either (though I do know of it secondhand). Divorced the idiot box the year before Dallas first went to air ('78) - and haven't lived with one since.
