My guess re the cams is that it had a meeting of piston versus valve.
As for sockets?
I recently bought a 1/2 inch drive 32 mm kingchrome for $8 at Mitre 10 and although I have an impact socket set that goes up to 2 1/2 inch I find I just buy large metric sockets I need or use the angle grinder and I've cut idler and pitman arms before to get a pesky component off a wrecked car.
Bonnets and even roof turrets can be happily stored upside down in the garage roof slung from old seatbelts etc and doors hung from all sorts of places with a simple rope and pulley system and some marine ply.
