Cleaning your wheels

This topic was the subject of some discussion some while ago. It mainly stemmed from a query posed by 260Benz after he had purchased his 300SE. In my situation, I have always used CT18, steel wool and/or scouring pad to clean the inside, plus elbow grease , of course. The results, depending of course on the job in hand, have not always been formidable.

This video, apart from the great musical accompaniment, shows a quite remarkable degree of success. I only have two problems - first of all, where to buy the stuff from, and secondly, the amount of work involved. However, it is a good video and illustrates just what can be achieved. Regards Styria

Styria thanks for the video.

The inside of the alloys on the 300SE need to be cleaned badly.

Alloys on the 300SE are going to be repainted before this years Concours and 20 new wheel bolts to be fitted.

Never heard of that IronX wheel cleaner product before that guy used in the video.

Clay baring the alloys as well that is a handy hint!

I now use Autoglym acid-based wheel wash and buy it in bulk. It eats gunk very quickly but I am careful to avoid painted areas of the car and to get it off fairly quickly.
Now - a new miracle product is "Australian Export Wet Look Tyre Shine" and it's better than ANYTHING else I have ever used for cleaning white-walls. It is just plain bloody incredible and as cheap as chips. It leaves Prepsol for dead and beats a White Magic scouring pad - although it is silicone based.
As for the inside of my wheels - because they are polished with Swissvax the gunk comes off easily.

There's no way I'd be using any scouring pad, steel wool or similar to clean my wheels. Remember they're only coated in paint not unlike the rest of the car.... If you scrub off the clear coat it won't be long before they corrode.
