Classic Salzburg and Cars

There was a wonderful selection of cars that took part and it is hoped that the following pics, will illustrate my point.

I counted, from memory, no less than thirty Gullwings and 300SL Roadsters (I prefer them to the Gullwings) and I found that open top 280SE 3.5 Coupes are also all the rage. There were, somewhat surprisingly, no 6.3's and just a solitary gold 6.9 in somewhat nice condition, and shod with 15" Bundts. He turned up late in proceedings and did not take part in the hillclimb.

My favourite car (valued at about 5 million Euros) - yes, I have taste but not the money is this late thirties convertible. Just have a look at the exquisite pearl inlay dash, and ALL the other .....hmm...beautiful nick-nacks.











Okay, that was my favourite. As I said, champagne taste, beer pocket and no disrespect to the malt consuming fraternity. So, how about this 300SL ?




or, better still, how about this one from (the late twenties ?)




Now, there was even a "ring-In" - a solitary supercharged Bentley -




I didn't mind the next one either.....

I agree, as hallowed as the Gullwing is, I really do love the lines of the roadster, but I have to say, my ultimate favourite "classic" soft top Benz is a 3.5 cabrio.

Hi 116 Benz, I do know that the V8 version is the most sought after of those Convertibles and Coupes - Salzburg had them in abundance - but, in my opinion, Mercedes had already commenced on the "cheapening" manufacturing process by that stage. The dash on the V8 had become an all vinyl component as in one single piece (quoting from memory !), whereas the earlier 220 (?) and certainly the 300 had an exquisite wooden binnacle and some other rather nice features that were not present in the V8.

Suspension wise, believe it or not, I found a 220 Convertible Coupe nicer to drive and handle than either a 300 as well as a 3.5 and strange as it may seem, even with a 220 engine up front, it did not dim my liking for the 220. It was just "so well" how everything on that car 'clicked'. Regards Styria

Styria, at the end of the day, it wouldnt matter if it was a 220, 250 or a 280SE cabrio. I love the look of them, I think the 280 didnt have the full timber dash compared to the 220 or the 250SE (from memory). Ultimately, one of them will be my retirement present to myself, along with a 6.3 in matching colours.

Very nice pictures, I have to agree with you on the cars, very nice.

gullwings look very cramped to fit into, yes the steering wheel collapses but still seems hardly any room, more fitting on a race track than a GT car.
