Yes with the international borders open and interest rates going up, I think the heat is going out of the market. Really nice cars are still going at a premium, but average condition, high ks or anything like that is not getting the prices they used it.

Lot of interesting cars coming up this weekend at the Lloyds Auction. Here is a bit of a preview.

1655944086105.png

Lot 250: The auction is all confused, on one hand saying its a 180, on the other a W180 220S. Its def a four cylinder, but I don't know enough about these to verify the year and which variant it actually is. Looks a bit tatty and feels like its been a bit molested over the years..

Lot 251: 190. Barn find condition, but I think more original than the 180. Big project.
Lot 253: Non runner that has been selectively restored in places. Already at 27k. These are exceptional cars but this one doesn't jump out at me.
Lot 254: This car looked somewhat interesting on first glance, but then you look at how they just painted over the chrome mirror etc. But the real shock is the interior photos that I can only describe as bordello. The fact that somebody would bid this thing up to $10k is astounding to me.
Lot 255: Non runner project 6.9 on gas. #6210. Ruined paint. what a hard life this car has lived. If its really only done 180k then I'm the wizard of oz.

First row, pretty disappointing, would not bid on any of them.

Lets see if there is anything better with the 2nd row:
1655944782384.png

Lot 256: Fist one that looks halfway interesting, a great model in a great colour. Let down by having W108 seats, and I think door trims. Shame, as a W109 should have its proper equipment. I would pass on it for that reason alone unless It was really cheap to put right. Seats are obviously from an earlier car too, no headrests. Needs a general tidy up.

Lot 259: What a rustbucket. Next. Shame, as its a very desirable 280 3.5 with a great interior colour. Personally I don't like W108s in white, but lots of people do. Quite a late car, 11/72 compliance. #11628

Lot 262: 250/8. Its the more attractive first series. Has been painted in sections as the panels are different colours. Generally tidy car other than the silly 3.5 badge on the back. With the bidding at $2,500 could be a nice entry level classic merc for somebody.

Lot 265: More rust than car, parts car only. 4th time its been up, always passed in, the owner must thing this thing is worth more than about $500. May yield up some good parts, but also a non runner.

Lot 268: Reasonably tidy 450SLC, would be worth a look. presence of rust gatherers ('chrome' wheel trims) a worry. Interior in nice shape, had some paint touch ups in normal rust places that don't match the car. at the right price, could be good.

Lot 269: This looks like a quite nice car and worth keeping an eye on the price. Seems in nice condition overall. The headliner is quite discoloured, so I would want to make sure the sunroof drains are not letting water into the cabin. I think the series 2 wheels work really well on the series 1. Great colour, though again the rust traps on the wheel arches spoil the look. First car on the block I would be very happy to have in my garage.

Lot 269A: Solid 300D that could be used as a daily. general wear and tear but nothing too bad. Great dependable cars.

Lot 270: Love signal red on a W126 although its a marmite colour. Hideous wheels, although easily fixed. In ok driver condition. Needs new dash wood.

Lot 271: Conversion from LHD. RUN AWAY.

Lot 272: A nice, but not perfect 560SEC in a great colour. Some blemishes, but nothing too bad. 1989, so pre-ASR which is great. Some ugly aftermarket bling that could be easily removed. Private import, so more powerful engine than the aussie one. Honkers car, so better than UK.

This has probably been the best row, with the two SECs quite nice, and the W123 and W126 potentially ok drivers at the right price.

Final row.

Lot 274: This one has been up a few times now. Ruined front spoiler, needs a general tidy up. I suspect that's because its in average condition but the seller sees the prices for nice ones and wonders why his/hers doesn't get those prices. At the right price could be a good daily.

Lot 275: White is a pretty bad colour for an SEC in my view, and this one being a 91 has ASR, something else to avoid. No reserve auction, so it will sell. At the right price you could ignore both of those things. Still got the highly coveted becker CD player. Actually in quite nice condition and the more I look at it, the more I like it.

Lot 276: No interest in these, didn't look.

Lot 280: ditto

Lot 283: Not a huge fan of the W140, but this (the 500) is the one to have with the bullet proof quad cam engine. 1996 means a lot fewer issues than the earlier cars. Attractive colour combo.

If I had to guess, I would have to guess the red ones!

For somebody that has access to a body shop, 259 could be interesting if cheap enough as nice ones go for $30-$50k.
Obviously the 6.9, but the lpg would have to come out too. nice ones going for $30-$50, although it would take a lot to make it nice.
268 could also do with some paint work, could be a really nice SLC after that.

Red is a colour I like 😁
259 is a repairable write-off, which doesn't mean anything structurally, but it means you'll never get decent value.
I don't want any 6.9s... I want to sell mine
As for the others, I don't have the spare cash to buy and sell. I'm too committed at work at the moment.

To expand on this, the bidding is online and works like grays. the lots have an end time but are extended by a few mins each time there is a bid until no more bids.
Shipping rates for cars are quite competitive and the cars were dropped off to me without fuss.

I didn't think the pictures misrepresented the cars, although descriptions are very lacking.

OK Results:
Lot 250: 180 Ponton: $7,102.
Lot 251; 190 Ponton: $4,220 - not bad for a barn find, but parts would be hard to find
Lot 253: 220SE Coupe: $44,500. I think they overpaid given the condition.
Lot 254: 280SE W180: $15,102: Def overpaid. That interior was hideous
Lot 255: Project 6.9: $6,202: No such thing as a cheap 6.9, but at least it leaves a lot of room to improve it.
Lot 256: 300SEL 3.5. $19,000. Not a bad buy, but the proper W109 interior is missing and has been replaced with a W108 unit. At least the price leaves room for a proper re-trim. No reserve.
Lot 259: 280SE 3.5: $8,301: A real rustbucket. Would cost a lot to fix this properly.
Lot 262: 250/8 : $3,700: Seemed like it could have been a decent car with some effort
Lot 265: 280SE W116 parts car: $610. Surprised this thing still had structural integrity. Worth it if it had parts somebody needed. No reserve
Lot 268: 450SLC: $18,000. Could be nice with a bit of a tidy up. Could be a good buy
Lot 269: 380SEC: $9,900: a good price for this car if it actually met reserve
Lot 269A: 300D W123 $3,100: Seemed like a decent buy, again assuming it made reserve.
Lot 270: 280SE W126: $1750: good buy. needs wheels.
Lot 271; 560SL: $39,000: LHD conversion, overpaid.
Lot 272: 560SEC: $18,200 - good buy if it sold
Lot 274: 300E-24: $1,905 - needs work but decent buy
Lot 275: 560SEC: $16,000 - very good buy, even though its white and an asr car.
