Black Or Silver - Which Do You Like Better?

Hello,

I've just made up an alternative grille to bolt to the car as mood takes me. Here is a picture of the existing grille as well as the alternative:

the problem with the original grey plastic insert grille, is that after 30 years it looks crap, all faded in the sun, I don't mind the look of a brand new grille insert, otherwise paint it black till you buy a brand new one.

Silver is more original and I would worry what the black would look like after a few rainy days or dusty roads as it would be difficult to keep clean.

Call me old-fashioned but my vote is for keeping it original. If the designers at MB had thought they would look better in black they would have made them black.

That said, the black makes the chrome look good.

........so where would AMG fit into the scheme of things. I believe they painted just about everything in colour, including the chrome.........the sporty look that tuners tried to create in the '70s and '80s. Regards Styria

99.9% of the time, I like to keep my vehicles as original as possible.

Using that logic, I'd say keep it grey - HOWEVER you do have the AMG lower spoiler, with black painted highlights.

Use the black painted grille, which will make more of a feature of the front of the car, highlight the chrome trimming and also make the 6.9 appear more of a monster to the poor sucker in front of you on the road!

How about a matching, colour coded grille insert???

I tend to agree with 450SE - a blacked out grille would nicely match the two plastic lower grille halves. Certainly worth an experiment. Regards Styria

Is there any update of the past few weeks?

For what it's worth, I'm collecting a new grille, chrome inlay trims & bonnet star for the 450 tomorrow. There's nothing particularly wrong with the current one, aside from being 35 years old - but the end of financial year is almost upon us & I needed to find another 'deduction'...

Yep! I have just discovered that I have enough bits to do a third grille. It will be colour coded matched to the car, but without the alloy grille inserts, which I may fit later, if I acquire enough in good enough condition.

If the gods had intended the grille to be red, then red would have been an option at the time. Oh, yours is a custom colour anyway? Well in that case the answer is still: NO!!!
