Thanks to Tech section I now have the answer to my slow air valve return Should be fully closed by 80% As i can't even see the thing under the manifold of the 280 SL I wonder if the majic spray from Subaru for degunking the inlet manifolds etc would do the trick sprayed up the air inlet of the valve ? ? Sean

on an M117 it should be seated shut (Actually there is a small amount of air that still bleeds thru by design) @ 66 Celsius not 80.

Clean by spraying with a quality parts wash (Repco) or Repco brand degreaser and watch the amount of carbon flushed out, leave to soak overnight in the solvent cleaner and blow out again with the pressure pacK degreaser (Repco again).

Do this until you no longer flush out black carbon and rinse using brake cleaner which leaves zero residue (Repco brand again)

So.... Flush and flush again, soak overnight and flush again, soak over night and flush with brake cleaner as a final rinse.

Test unit before and after with hot water and a thermometer ($5 meat thermometer is fine) and the unit should shut at 66 centigrade.

I thought it was 80 but the Bosch spec is 66 Celsius.

BTW, is your M117 (450/380) a D jet or K jet engine?

And in answer to your suuby spray? No.

It has to be removed, it is located in the top of the intake manifold towards the front just back from the distributor (On an M117 V8)

The unit sits partly in the water jacket and I think its a 5 or 5.5 mm allen bolt x 2 that holds it in.

Be sure to clean the mating faces of the manifold and AAV and use a sensor safe sealant when you goo it back in.

Thanks Tony there are no short cuts it seems. My car is a Euro 280SL, 110 engine The valve is down there somewhere. As it eventually shuts off 5-6 Ks I'll put it in the too hard basket as I may have to remove the Cyl. head in the fucture V/ stem seals. Sean

Did you perchance find my How to thread?

I have a picture here somewhere with the location of the AAV on an injected 110 but I believe yours will be hidden under the air cleaner assy.

These valves usually only have air pass through but they also seem to accumulate oil for whatever reason and either way will need periodic attention.

Not a difficult job and when i get back (I have to run some errands now) I will hunt up the pic and the link to the AAV thread.

For what its worth the thread was documenting my first overhaul and took more patience than expertise.

Ok, Facing the engine on the right hand side towards the front of the engine just below where the head joins the block.

The picture I found is not mine (My 280S is carburated) and I have marked it accordingly.
