aftermarket parts experiences

The quality of aftermarket parts for Mercedes is so variable these days, I wanted to created a thread to learn from examples of what parts are good, and what parts are poor quality and should be avoided. It is also worth identifying the true OEM supplier for parts.

So far, my experience with a meyle transmission mount was poor, the part was lower quality than the previous one and had to be modified to fit.

Helmet has mentioned not to use the Febi timing chain guides in M116/M117 engines.

I know IWIS is the OEM supplier of M116/M117 timing chains.

I have always soursed Mercedes parts from Silver Star in Kingsgrove. They supply only OEM and know their Job. I never had an issue with anything.

Most of my European car parts I get are from ASV/Eurocarparts

You have good memory Bryce, generally Meyle are poorest quality “German” parts with Lempforder being the best, usually you get what you pay for.

Unfortunately I could not find an alternative to Meyle for a W126 electric fan. The factory one was USD$450, Meyle is $120. I couldn't find any other brands.

At least its not hard to replace if complete junk.

Adding another one to this list. A friend had the voltage regulator replaced on his w123 last year. The garage used KAE brand.

He just told me it was not charging well again. On inspection the KAE regulator was all corroded. Another used reg got the car charging again so he now has a Bosch on order.

Like buying a used Car ( or Bike ) I buy from the Guy...if he does not pass muster move on.
I trust "Silver Star" over many years always good advice and quality never had a problem.
They just source OEM and are selective. Could be that what OEM supplies to a Manufacturer
and what they dump to the Aftermarket may not be the same ..

Unfortunately silver star no longer seem to supply parts for classics. Tried a few times even on basic stuff and I’ve given up now.

My latest reading tells me that Wiring Harnesses are going to become extinct. Even Mercedes is now importing some from Mexico to fulfill a shortfall. ICE Cars uses Kilometres of Wiring, heavy and expensive. Tesla has a type on modular System, to tackle the weight issue. Less weight = more H.P.
Predictions are now, that in a few short years time, Electric will be King . much less Wire required a plus.
