300SE windscreen

300SE has the original MB windscreen fitted to the car back in 1989.

Windscreen has stone chips and scratched time for a new screen.

How much would a new screen roughly cost for the 300SE?

I have polished the front screen with glass polish which has made a big improvement.

But the those annoying stone chips and scratches visibility is important when driving.

Have you phoned your local windscreen fitter?

You should be able to get it done for around $350 (aftermarket screen)

Instant Tint & windscreens $425 they use PPG screens.

Contact Novus Windscreens & O'Brien Glass as well.

Novus Salamander Bay fitted a new screen for the 260E 3 years ago $365 from memory.

Has anyone dealt with Koala Glass before?

Tim, it is not a complex job in a 300SE so probably any well-known name will be OK.
The quote for a new front screen on the Spirit is $5000+ so count your lucky stars that you are not looking at that kind of figure.

That seems reasonable Tim. It's also cheaper and more effective than having your windscreen professionally polished - and you get a better result.

Instant Windscreens quote was incorrect.

Spoke to Instant Screens on the phone today.

$390 laminated screen supply & fit at your house or place of work.

$350 laminated screen supply & fit at the Instant workshop.


The Spirit would require a Factory Rolls Royce screen hence the price is that correct Brian?

That is part of the issue Tim - but the main cause of the cost is that the dash has to be dis-assembled, the headlining and A pillar trims removed before replacing the screen and then it all has to go back together. It is not a job for the inexperienced so that rules out most windscreen installers for the job and means a specialist must be used.
The other problem is the cost of freighting a new screen from the UK. I was lucky to buy the last remaining Spirit rear screen in Australia before Christmas - original with the gold thread through the glass for demisting.

Fair enough Brian.

Screen replacement for the Spirit requires a specialist to remove and fit new screen.

Insurance cost for the screen would be expensive as well I imagine Brian?



Now Instant Screens have provided me with 3 different quotes quite silly really!


O'Brien Glass quoted me $418 now Max on the phone told me to hold one moment.

Max had details of my local O'Brien at Lambton they have two laminated screens in stock suitable for the 300SE.

Max said we won't need to order a screen from Sydney.

Total cost for the screen considering my local O'Brien's have the screen in stock will be $376.

I quoted the year & model Mercedes I have on the phone to O'Brien's.

Very good service and can't complain about the price.

Callum at Instant said he has had previous experience with the Broadmeadow workshop and Calilum has quoted Customers prices for screens.

Customer goes into the shop and the price of the screen cost more than they were originally quoted.

So my judgement tells me to go with O'Brien's okay I pay $13 more with O'Brien's but at least I know the price is correct.

No nasty surprises!

I do not have windscreen insurance for the 300SE it will be a good idea even a smart idea to update to screen insurance.

Rego & insurance renewal is not due until June.

Yaris use to have windscreen insurance double check if the car still is covered.

Just an update.

Mick the Boss at Instant Windscreens telephoned me this morning.

Mick quoted me $355 supply & fit total cost to fit a new screen for the 300SE.

Cancelled the booking with O'Brien Glass they could match Instant Screens price.

300SE booked in 8am Thursday.

Instant quoted me more originally as they thought the 300SE had a rain sensor fitted to the car.

300SE with a rain sensor can't imagine that being a optional extra back in 1989?

Rains sensors were available on mid-fifties American convertible cars (such as my 1956 Chevrolet Convertible) allowing the (convertible) top to be automatically raised (all by itself) upon the perception of rain touching the seats!

I am not Insured with Shannons.

Insured with the NRMA.

Rego & Insurance is due in June so I will look at upgrading to windscreen insurance.

Can't wait for the new screen drivers vision out the screen will be better.

Make sure I keep my MBCNSW window sticker for the new screen that is a must!
