He's obviously trying hard for you Tim, otherwise he wouldn't have called.

He might be trying to 'place' your car with another dealer, thus it's taking him time to try and get you the best price he can.

Patience glasshopper :D

Okay thanks Michel 'Patience is a Virtue' should know the trade-in price tomorrow.

Andrew does seem quite a good fellow just by talking to him on the phone.

To me it "Looks" Great although if this is an exotics dealer id have thought they would have cleaned the leather.

Id ask for an idea of major works carried out and when and it looks like the ABS may have had work?.

But if you are happy with the money it looks like a nice car.

Thank you for that info Tony very helpful.

What makes you say if the ABS may have had any work Tony?

300SE was last serviced 10,000kms ago I wonder if the car needs any repairs yes I know it's a 22 year old car.

Car dealer Andrew has told me the 300SE has been serviced by several MB Dealerships and the 300SE does have service history I would need to see the service history- log books to confirm this.

I am thinking the trade-in offer for my 260E could be $2000 I am guessing that is what there offer will be if this is the case the offer in my opinion is way under valued.

What do you guys think the offer will be or is my guess of $2000 sound right?

If it is an offer of $2000 I am not going to accept that price that is for sure.

Of course I have to hear from the car dealer first to find out his offer.

Another thing is I have not seen the 300SE in person myself nor have I driven the car and the 300SE is for sale at Haberfield and I live in Nelson Bay.

I will have to be patient and wait to hear from the car dealer I guess.

Cheers guys.

I recongise the number plates on this 300SE and I am sure the car was for sale on the Carsales site 6 months ago, 300SE does look familiar.

I will contact two MB Mechanics in Newcastle to see if they know anything about the 300SE for sale.

Cheers.

Spoke to seller of the Midnight blue 300SE he is calling me back.

Both MB Mechanics in Newcastle did not know the car or the 300SE service history.

Midnight blue 300SE is quite interesting spoke to the owner selling the car elderly owner Ken Tucker is his name.

Ken has only had the 300SE for less than a year new windscreen fitted by the NRMA I did not know the NRMA fitted windscreens?

September 2012 rego, service history.

300SE has been serviced by my Mechanic in Newcastle until two years ago.

Mechanic knew the previous owner Perry my Mechanic said the car was in good condition, Perry has not worked on the car for two years.

Current owner sounds like he is a Member of the Newcastle Mercedes Club would have to confirm that.

Ken use to have a 1968 Porsche, he also has a red CLK 230 Mercedes.

Ken did sound a very genuine guy on the phone.

Midnight blue is a nice colour in my opinion and the 300SE has chrome wheel arches fitted.

I was right I knew I recongised the 300SE for sale the number plate was the clue and it was for sale in Newcastle like I said previously less than a year ago.

I would have to go and see the 300SE in person does sound like a good car.

Have to sell the 260E first of course then purchase another Mercedes you guys know that I have made mention of that.

Still no word from Andrew at British & Continential in Sydney in regards to the white 300SE and waiting on the trade-in valuation.

260E is at the Mechanics today new ball joints fitted and a wheel alignment going to pick up the 260E today look forward to the drive in the car with new parts fitted!

That's the latest guys.

Cheers.

New ball joints fitted today on the 260E and what an improvement so much better the ride in the 260E very smooth I kid you not!

As soon as I drove the 260E home from the Mechanics I could instantly feel the difference.

I have the old ball joints in the boot keep those and they are the original Mercedes ball joints that were on the 260E since new March 1990!

Mercedes emblem is displayed on the ball joints and they sure were in bad condition!

Wheel alignment carried out as well all four wheels perfectly aligned so very happy with the job!
:D

And I also heard back from Andrew car dealer at British & Continental his trade-in price was $5000 for my 260E.

What do you guys think of the trade-in price?

Andrew's white 300SE asking price is $8500 that would be a $3500 change over price.

Cheers.

Decisions. Decisions. You need to go and have a look at the 300SE before you can decide Tim.
Drive it and see if it feels so much better than your current car that you really want it. Ask Andrew to find you a quiet road so you are not hassled by the traffic (given that they are in a very busy part of Parramatta Rd - maybe even go on a Sunday) and see if you come away wanting the car.
I won't comment on the money angle because that is your decision.
Question: do you like white with a light grey interior? Would you want to live with the 300SE?
You are in the very good position of having still having a good car if you decide not to go ahead with the 300SE.
Regards,
Brian

Thank you for your opinion Brian.

Trade-in offer was to be honest more than I expected it would be from the car dealer.

After driving my 260E today with the new ball joints fitted the car sure did put a small on my face that is for sure!

Like I said I would be sad to part with 260E my asking price seems more than fair.

I just wonder why there has been no phone calls or email enquiries about the 260E that could soon change.

$3500 is the change over price for the white 300SE that is out of my budget sad to say so there is no point test driving the 300SE and the white exterior colour is not for me I can't see myself living with or driving a white Mercedes.

260E is still for sale the price is $6500 negotiable even my Mechanic said today the Mercedes is a good car and should easily sell and he said the price was good.

Cheers guys,
Tim.

Fair enough Tim.
The problem is the economy. Second hand cars are just not selling well at the moment and that is not going to change for a while. Don't get your hopes up too high for selling the 260 - and if you don't, remember you still have a car that puts a smile on your face.
Regards,
Brian

We are doing better here in AUS as the Economy is much better here than the US and Europe.

Starting to look at the log books all the service history for the 260E in the last 4 years I will have to sit down and work out how much I have spent on the Mercedes.

In saying that the 260E is much better than it was 4 years ago I have and always will be a fan of the W124 E-Class.

260E is on the market you can all probably tell that by now! LOL.

Cheers.

Tim, once you add it all up, be prepared for a shock. One normally spends far more than we can remember. Regards Styria

Very true Styria!

Sit down and work out what I have spent on the 260E in the last 4 years but the way the 260E looks and drives it has been worth it.

I have made the decision not to good ahead with white 300SE for sale unfornately I am disappointed to say that!

The change over price of $3,500 is way out of my budget so there is no point in test driving or having the 300SE inspected a PPI- Pre-purchase inspection carried out.

300SE does look a good car I would not be surprised to see if the 300SE will soon be sold if it is as good as the car dealer has stated.

Service history does sound impressive mind you last service was 10,000kms ago 22 year old car it may need repairs?

10,000km service might be a straight forward service and the car could spring up unwanted surprise which could be costly.

I will keep an eye on the 300SE to see if it does sell or the asking price is reduced.

Search continues guys and the 260E is still for sale.

Thanks guys.

Good morning,

See what you think of the price to fit the new ball joints, and a wheel alignment?

I have kept the old ball joints they are stuffed and also the original ball joints!

Fit new ball joints on the 260E price includes 4hrs
labour, parts and GST and a wheel alignment?

$520.30

Mechanic had to remove the lower control arms and as the ball joints would not come out they were on the car for 22 years no wonder they would not come out!

Control arms were put in the press to press out ball joints to fit new ball joints then refit the control arms back onto the car.

Cheers.

Ok, for what its worth?

5k trade in isn't a bad deal, its not a great deal but that's the way it works with dealers.

Usually anything over 10 years or 150 thousand k has an insulting tradein offer unless the car you are buying has a heavy "Yard tax" which is basically wiggle margin for dealers over what the car is reasonably worth.

So a 5k car has a $7500 sticker so you can haggle down to $5500 or $6200 and get a fabulous deal on your clapped out VK Commodore as a trade in (Actually worth scrap plus rego value) and drive away in the new purchase happy.

Its jiggling numbers at its best (Or worst) which is why I only sold cars for a short time.

So back to the Cars!

Stick with good provenance, service doco etc.

So forget the SE In Newcastle (Lotta flood recovered cars there BTW) unless the guy can provide history.

I think that the White SE looks best on paper, the dealer knows the 260 will flip fast and he will make a few K on it so he comes out ahead and is one less 126 on the lot.

The sentiment in Vic is that 126 and 140 models are hard to shift, W201's and later chassis are not so hard to flip and no dealer wants to have a 116 on the lot so you have a desirable trade-in.

Id be haggling and if the deal is out of your current reach then tell the guy what you do want to pay and why remembering to keep a few dollars in your pocket.

From memory Sales commissions get paid in the first week of the month so the sales staff will be hungry till then and be looking to close a deal before the end of the month.

So now is the time to do a good deal mate and remember you are not there to make a new friend, you are there to get the best deal.

Tony

Beautiful!!! You better act quickly though because if Michel sees it he may just snap it up (being red n all)!! :D:)

The one problem you have Tim is jumping the gun; looking for a replacement BEFORE selling your other car in order to finance the purchase. This car could be perfect, but if you have no other finance options you may have to sit on your hands while someone else drives it away... Its like looking for houses before getting bank finance approval first.

Unfortunately I've done exactly that in the past (with the help of a stuff-u-about broker) and it can be a very stressful position to be in!! And not what you want as you depart on an OS holiday!!
