Check the battery tray on your W126
I just changed the battery on my 560SEL. For a car that has been garaged all its life and I can't find any rust at all, the battery tray was quite nasty.

Basically I removed the tray, cleaned it up with a wire brush attachment on my drill, primed, painted and re-installed.

Not only was the tray nasty there was a lot of debris underneath...
