What kind of engine have I got?

I am busy stripping an old 1978 280SE to use for parts in, ironically, an older version of the same car (1974).
Both cars have different engines however, so am looking to sell the engine in the stripped car as it won't be much use to me unless I am replacing the whole thing. Anyway, I have no place to store it even if I wanted to.
My good car has its original fuel-injected engine, whereas the other donor car has a carburettor engine. All I know is that it's not the original engine, but I have no idea what car it came out of. I was planning to post a pic or two to see if someone recognised it but it seems I can't.
Any suggestions of links to pictures of Merc engines online that I can compare it against myself?

Does the block look the same? It's just got a carby instead of the EFI?
If so, it's the 280S. Is the carby a holley or solex?

More importantly, is the car a manual or automatic?

.....this could be the start of a Team 116 car in New Zealand?!

You know what? I don't know. I am about as mechanically minded as my mum ... It's dark out and one car isn't here, but will look at them both and see what they have ...

They are both automatic though ... that much I do know.

If they are twin cam sixes and are genuine Mercedes motors they are from the 110 Family.

Early 110's had electronic fuel injection (280SE) ar carburetor(280S).

After 1976 the fuel injection changed from electronic (D-jetronic) to Mechanical (K-Jetronic).

THe fuel distributor of a K-jetronic could be mistaken for a carburetor at a quick glance.

If it is really a carburetor it may be a 280S motor put in a 280SE or even simply the boot badge changed.

Give us the VIN numbers of both cars and we will soon tell you what they started life as.
