Weight of a 6.9 engine & trans

Well I was lucky enough to get an engine crane & separate stand for Christmas, but I'm wondering if they'll be up to the task. Does anyone have an idea of just how much a 6.9 with trans attached would weigh? My crane has a 1 ton capacity and I'm guessing the engine/trans would be at least that, if not more. BTW the missus is happy to exchange if they're not correct, so I'm not about to start a fight this early in the new year!!!

This is only a partial answer:
A 350 SEL weighs 1700 kg
A 450 SEL weighs 1790 kg
A 450 SEL 6.9 weighs 1935 kg

I am guessing that a complete long engine with transmission attached would weigh in the region of 750 kg.

I have seen a 6.9 stripped for parting out, and the engine and transmission were removed connected to each other. In this case, the engine and transmission were removed with a block and tackle.

One problem with engine removal is that all of the connecting cables and lines do not have connectors in them, and so thay have to be cut.

I would be happier using a 1.5 ton crane but I would think your 1 tonner would be adequate (just).

Most of the bigger engine cranes have three different lift points with weight limits marked for each point.

Mark, I'd go with brother Bill, but only just. I think the last thing you'd want would be for the assembly to get snagged on any part of the bodywork and the whole assembly tipping over - that would be less than nice.

As a matter of interest, why you pose this question ? You thinking of removing assembly and, if so, why ? Must be reason. You must get members' approval first ! Regards Styria

Just be careful when lifting the engine with gearbox, in case the whole assembly snags and you end up lifting the rest of the car as well.

The total load may well go over a tonne.

Look for upward movement of the rest of the car.

The crane has 4 lifting positions depending on the extension of the arm. Fully extended it's rated at 250kg, followed by 500kg, 750kg and 1000kg (fully retracted). Problem is that it may not have enough reach when fully retracted to be correctly positioned over the engine, or raise the assembly sufficiently to clear even the lowest (& harder to remove) parts on the front of the car. Removal is necessary to salvage bits from my parts car & make more room for the rest of my stuff...

Obviously, it would be safer to part the transmission from the engine first; the engine would also be easier to remove. There is would be less chance of snagging it against the rest of the car.

Also it would be safer to remove as many ancilliaries as possible from the engine as well. All it takes is extra work..........especially if you have to put them back on again.

You might have to bite the bullet, put on the biggest smile and ask Mrs Oversize to exchange for a heavier duty unit

Ok revising an old thread since I've just ordered a set of 3T digital scales! I noticed someone else wanted an answer in another thread, so I thought I might put us all out of our misery!

So the big question will be finally answered; how much does a 6.9 engine weigh? Guesses anyone?
