Wanted W 114 4.08 differential

Hello fellow MB enthusiasts,

I'm currently looking to see if anyone has a W 114 diff, preferably a 4.08.

I'm looking at replacing the 3.69 diff in the W116.

Current engine setup is a lexus V8, sits on just over 2000 rpm at 100, which is fine. but I would rather have a higher ratio for lower end grunt.

Would a W114 diff handle the torque?

My answer is no highest W116 ratio was 3.92 fitted to 5 speed manual 280S they are out there if not common. W114 is a smaller housing .

W123/126 are inter changeable with W116 .

Thanks for your replys.

Not sure on its ability to handle the torque, but neither was I with the 116 diff.

I'm actually after a W 115 4.08. I'm not sure on their strength, however it looks as though they are running the same size housing ?

Here is a good link I found on MB diff ratios.

3.92 is from 5 speed not 4 speed manual I know of one just wrecked in W.A it belonged to TJ but he sold it to Giles from Ozbenz forum . They are not common but they do exist.

If you have any ideas how I might change the ratio I'm all ears. Never spent much time on differentials before. I just feel that changing the ratio in this car might just be the ticket to finish of the project.

I am pretty certain they are not compatible. But call Mb Spares in Canberra they would be able to confirm. I take it you are using Lexus gear box to get those highway revs. But at the end it is a high revving power plant that makes from 190 to 209Kw depending on vintage. But does not make a lot of torque so acceleration is sedate while top speed is great. And your W116 is at least 1660 to 1985kg which is heavier than original car.LS400 1664 to 1770kg . I have driven countless Lexus LS400 when they were new as my older brother used to sell them new.

No, if I wanted a rocket I would simply turbo my current engine.
Dont like either of those ford engines.

I was the first ls conversion known of back in 2008 that put a LS engine in a 116, I think a few may have followed suit.

The car already is very quick, I've basically tripled the horse power and lost about 180 kgs in the process

Just saw your first post and to answer.

LS 400 s were 1745 kg.

My 116 '1610' kg as stamped on build plate.

Car is now around 1450kg, estimate. But a tonne of weight has been removed. Original engine and gearbox were very heavy.

Will accelerate to 100 in the 6 sec bracket. Quicker than my mate's 2005 monaro after a few darbys Many a surprising speactator has seen the Ol girl pass them.

The shorter diff will accentuate what is already a quick car.

The weights quoted for cars were from carpoint . First LS400 was 1664kg was UCF10R . 1770kg was for UCF20R version . I know of a few Lexus conversions over here in Perth they are great engines. Just lacking in low down torque which is just a fact based on capacity. Now to really fry your noodle a mate had your 4.0 engine in a Rodeo ute with manual fitted . Recently fitted 4.6 from GS460 after sorting fitted to same gearbox and exhaust. Ute went from low 14's to high 12's at Kwinana dragstrip. He is talking about fitting engine to hiace . :eek: So don't think I am negative I like the idea some pictures would be great. Look for Mercules article he fitted old 4.0 Falcon engine to his W116 so a XR6 Turbo would be great. :D

Motec, I think weights depend on where the car was sold. I do recall a mid 1600kg ls. Australia Do get the more basic of the Ls 400's. Some Jap spec cars had airbag suspension etc which increased the weight.
I dont really know what the M110 engine weighs, but it could easily be 100kgs or more on the 1uzfe.

Gs460 conversion sounds very interesting, must be a fairly rare find ?

GS460 was bought at insurance auction was stat write of paid 11k from memory. Its a rocket with 255kw standard . Ute has twin 2.5 inch exhaust is regular at the strip.:D

Thanks Motec. I see there have been a number of conversions over the years.
If you look at some of my earlier posts you will see a link to pictures of the car and engine.
Although I've added custom headers and alloy radiator and a few other things since.

That earlier link I posted states that the W 115 diff is interchangeable with the W116. Now is the W115 diff known for its frailty ? Would it be particularly 'weaker' than the 116 ?. They are both listed as 1.1 litre volume.
