W140 OBD1 or OBD2

I know it's a modern Mercedes guys but there is a wealth of knowledge amongst you so I'm hoping someone here might be able to help me.

Ok guys I have a December 1996 S280 (W140) complianced Jan 1997 now I know all cars into the US 96 on had to run OBD2 can anyone confirm that my car is running OB2 rather than OBD1 I'm sure it's 2 but if someone in the know could confirm it, that would be much appreciated. I'm in the process of buying an OBD program for my laptop so I can talk to the car so to speak. My mate has just brought a 98 S600 so we are putting together some tools for when the dealer no longer has the software applications etc, yes we are keeping the cars for a long time they are so nice to drive and ride in.

Hi Mathew not sure which ob program you will need but John Green of mb spares in Canberra would be able to tell you he post on ozbenz.com .I know when the Canberra mercedes dealer went broke a few years ago john bought all there tools and machines plus workshop parts ph 1300 787 300

Whilst I prefer to work on cars with Chrome bumpers I do have some knowledge on these and are reasonably sure that MB never used OBD1. Instead they used there own 38 pin connector which had a pin for each function. See this picture that i have pinched off ebay..

Big round bit is the MB specific 38 pin connector and the OBD2 is the more rectangular looking one... The 38 pin connector was designed for the MB in house designed HHT (Hand Held Tester), unlike the later OBD2 systems where any generic tester will plug in...

The early W140 used the 38 pin connector and the later cars the OBD2, where the change was I are not entirly sure, somewhere around 95/96 I would presume.

Thanks a million guys OBD2 it is with MB connector the dealer here has been kind enough to acquire me the connector and the program I sourced from ebay so finally I can talk to the big beast.
