Just had a stainless steel muffler made and fitted to the old W126. Can't wait to pick it up and have a look.

Hi Simon,

I just had a new exhaust fitted to my W124 quite an impressive sound from the new exhaust I have to say! :D

May I ask how much did the s/steel exhaust set you back?

That is one fine 300SE you have Simon I might add!

Cheers Tim.

I hope you polish it and coat it with Glisten before installation. Nothing worse than a dirty exhaust....
Regards,
Brian

Or Purple Polish. It may cost me a few Concours points but it's probably more practical.

THe original 126 systems were designed for leaded petrol, and when they brought in the unleaded models with catalysts in 1986 the exhaust system was sadly wanting.

The rear muffler would rust through in 14 months (which was 2 months longer than the M-B Warranty on it's replacement) and the front muffler about 2 1/2 years.

I always kept mine original as it was so quiet (At the time aftermarket SS systems were notorious for noise and vibration) and just bit my lip and purchased new original mufflers at about $400 each and replaced them myself (My garage was littered with old ones for a while after 5 years of ownership) but in the early 90's they started making them out of better quality steel and I have never replaced a single exhaust component in any of the M-B's from my 1994 124 E280 on.

A replacement stainless sytem is a must for long term ownership and I hope it makes just the right amount of noise and no more for you.

Bill

Haven't got the car back yet, Tim. Fear not, once I do you'll be the first to know.

Excellent Simon!

How about a set of bling wheels and airbag suspension fitted to the car pimp my ride style! lol.

Cheers.

Interesting what WGB had to say relating to his 'muffler' experiences. I have but limited experiences and knowledge that I can relate here. However, I do know that original 6.9 mufflers were made of Aluminized mild steel in the interests of longevity, and I do seem to recall that original muffler systems probably cost in the region of at least two thousand dollars - plus fitting, of course. It makes the 126 mufflers look pretty cheap in comparison.

On Gleaming Beauty, I had to replace the original FIRST muffler about five years ago as it had disintegrated internally and rattled like 'whatever'. I am confident that it was original, so it lasted the best part of probably twenty eight years. I replaced it with a muffler (very flat and wide) from genuine 350SL - it cost $300-00 from an after market supplier, and at the same time fitted a 'new' used stainless steel rear muffler and flanged the complete system in the process. Regards Styria

Picked up the old W126 today. Had a few other jobs done as well as the muffler – full service, tie rods, ball joints etc. Lovely drive home, made me realise just how special these cars are. Twenty-five years old and still has such a presence on the road - I think I have fallen in love with it all over again. By all accounts I could have sold it a few times too while it was in the workshop.
