valve stem guide seals

hello all,
I have the 280SL M110 motor which is a bit smokey on start up, smells when the top is down and discolours the body work around the exhaust. The engine doesn't burn a lot of oil about 2 lt per 10,000ks. I am told that it is the valve guide stem seals and I can get them replaced without taking the head off. Can some one give me some feed back please.

This is a common problem on MBs and there was even a service update to correct the problem on some models. This job is tedious on an M110 (even with the right tools), but well worth the trouble if the engine isn't high mileage. Then you might be looking at pulling the head to replace guides, which will cost far more than just seals.

I'd be removing the cylinder head and have the valve guides replaced as well. This is a well known issue with these engines

Unless I am getting Terquel mixed-up with another 107 owner, he could well be overseas at the moment. I had been wondering if he had ever gotten around to addressing the issue of the worn valve guide seals. Mind you, if the guides are worn as well, that then becomes a fairly expensive job.

Obviously Helmet, it would seem you know your way around a bit (like Oversize), so I am looking forward to more technical know-how on your part. Regards Styria

hello again, I got the valve guide seals done and I was not happy with the result at first but after about a 1000kls things have improved a lot. Almost no smoke on start up and very little odour when driving and stopping at the lights. I would love to pull the head off and refurbish it but my feeling is the motor is a bit tired and I may get more than I bargain for. It's a Euro spec motor with high compression and oil cooler as delivered. It has higher HP rating than the Aussie delivered cars and has plenty of grunt.
