Gone are the days of 2nd gear start 4 speed Mercedes Trans, even the 1st gear start Valve Bodys in the 280SLs
Fast forward to Subaru's currant CVT. Going down hill yesterday, I found that it thinks for itself, (A. I.) downshifting on a feathered throttle, to effect engine braking. Selecting the manual over ride displayed the Gear number it had down shifted two.
I recall reading, that this transmission is best left to do its own thing. Forget the paddle shifts. These modern electronics amaze me.
Even as number 90 comes up at the end of this month I am never too old to learn !!

Sean you'd love the musical chairs they play with dual cab utes: many are made in Thailand, and the general consensus seems to be that 2 or more marques share each chassis: the Amarok and Ranger are the same car with different panels and engine options and iirc the Nissan Navara is related, the Mazda BT50 is really an Isuzu D-Max, and Mazda didn't even get to decide on the bodywork. But rewind a generation and the BT-50 was the Ranger, the Navara was the Mercedes X-Class, and all if them used Isuzu engines, because all of them were(/are?) made by Isuzu Thailand. Who used to also make the Holden Rodeo-cum-Colorado.

So the best selling car in Australia was a Ford, made by a GM subsidiary, and developed from a Holden.

But it's OK, because they made every one of its competitors, more or less, as well.

As for downshifting gearboxes on the overrun: my 2001 E46 BMW does that too, and it ain't no AI, just a ZF TCU ;)
