Never finished
as luck would have it, I found a guy in Melbourne, the other week, who repairs steering wheels for the trade, and others.
I went to his place to pick up some parts for my w108 and saw all these steering wheels (lots of mercedes) hanging from racks.
Upon questioning, he told me one of the things he does is "injecting" the casing to eliminate the twisting rubber feel. (Thats where the steering wheel casing has let go from the actual steel frame. Especially common in 116's I,ve been told).
Wish I'd met him 12 months ago before I went on my search of a good 2nd hand steering wheel for my 116.
I believe he polishes plastic headlights also.
His name is Chris and his email is rightwayent@bigpond.com
he's in Doncaster, Melbourne, but does work for people all over.
