I can’t believe people sell collectable wheels & don’t even bother washing them first! Even if you don’t own the right gear you could always take a trip to the local car wash...

Strip all the weights off, use a non acid wheel cleaner, firm brush & pressure washer. If one shot isn’t sufficient then repeat the process. Life is so much better with clean wheels! 😉😆

I might just hijack this thread, hopefully with Oversize's permission. Over a period of time, my Gleaming Beauty 6.9 has sported a variety of rims. Initially, it came with the standard 14" Baroque wheels, but I didn't really like them that much. At that time, they looked common and boring. I then switched to eight (?) hole 126 rims, but in due course I also tired of them, and onsold them to an ex TK member. Disposal of those rims came by way of courtesy as I was able to source two piece rims very much similar in looks to the AMG Pentas. Also they were 15" and one could obtain better quality tyres when compared with 14" tyres - originals are almost unobtainable.

I liked those unnamed two piece rims, but unfortunately I damaged one of them when hitting a curb, but I was fortunate in sourcing 18" pretty solid Alloys branded "Speedie" and manufactured in Taiwan to take their place. The curb damage to the two piece units was really beyond repair so I simply decided to replace all four with aforementioned "Speedie" units. I managed to source five rims with tyres initially at a cost of a grand, but the retailer had one spare unit (new) which I bought as well.

Those Taiwanese built Alloys are huge, solid and HEAVY, but with really up to date 18" tyres Gleaming Beauty's handling was transformed. I must admit that the ride is a little on the "solid as a brick" side similar to Air Suspended 6.3s, but never harsh or offensive. Some little while ago, I joined "My Car Club" after having my membership with the MB Club of NSW terminated by courtesy of its President (nice fellow that he is), and the new club was somewhat hesitant in accepting my application with a car modified with non-standard and to all intents and purposes oversize rims. I decided to toe the line and, believe it or not, went back to a set of oldish chromed original Baroque (Bundt) rims that I had managed to find, fitted with the correct size 2.15.70.14" Columbian manufactured tyres. Columbian ? Yes. It just so happens that in all likelihood not only would those tyres be somewhat illegal on account of age, but the same sentiments would also apply to the 18" Nankangs fitted to the aforementioned "Speedie" rims - time moves fast, and why, hey are about ten years old so more than likely, illegal. Best not have an accident with GB, as my Insurer would probably look at any accident claims with a jaundiced eye. So, why am I talking about all this ? Well, it takes me back to the two piece 15" ers. I separated the centre section, with the hope of perhaps being able to mate them up with larger rims, say 16 or, 17, maybe even 18 ? So far, I have been unable to achieve any of those options, but I still have the original chromed 15" rims. I managed to find a very capable and "hands on" tradesperson that was able actually quite well repair the damaged rim, and I then gave thought to re-chrome those rims and go back to what I had in the first place. You know, nice shiny rims, better tyres etc.......
Therefore, I hot footed it to my trusty Chrome Plater at Villawood - I had been there before and the quality of chrome was beyond reproach, although not cheap. I figured that maybe it might cost six to eight hundred $$$ for the lot, but little was I prepared for a quote of, wait for it, $1K. PER RIM. Covid 19 has created some pretty dicy, shall we say, practices. I can only put it down to that.
I'll keep you posted as to my next step, but I suspect it will be backwards, not the other way. I will also dig up photos to illustrate the various rims I have referred to - it might make the post more interesting. For the time being - Regards Styria

Well the 14s are problematic with the lack of tyre choices. 18s are about max diameter to allow for a reasonable sidewall profile, but some wheels are rather heavy compared to the original specs & I worry they could adversely affect the hydro suspension. The heavy cast wheels are also brittle & prone to cracking. The more expensive genuine 18s tend to be lighter, so they could be a worthwhile investment.

It's so easy to say "NO" in this present day and age. Or is it? I don't quite have the answer. The previously mentioned two piece 15" rims had been fitted to Gleaming Beauty for quite a long time. In the end, I had bought the "Speedie" rims, all six, with brand new Nankangs Sports - considered to be an "aggressive pattern" tyre, but certainly ticked all boxes as far as looks are, or were, concerned. Strangely, out of the six tyres, about two were manufactured in China, with the others coming from Japan - I think. Anyway, the right front rim had been damaged when I was horsing around (lack of judgement) and I solidly hit a shopping Centre concrete curb. Pretty ugly. So I put them away for some years as I did not have the heart to just chuck them out - why, the centre hubcaps were quite beautiful and I figured that some day I might manage to perform some far fetched miracle - you know, you need to talk money, are you being stupid to persevere with the lost cause, and I went close to all of that. Anyway, I found a very, very capable mechanic/ jack of all trades, Middle Eastern Tradie, who was confident that he could reshape the quite badly damaged outer lip. This was after three other "Wheel Repair" specialists had declined to take on the job, or even have have a constructive look at the damaged rim. All Aussie guys. Ten minutes, and fifty bucks later, and the repairs were up to 90% standard. Brilliant, but yet so easy.

As I would have to be "Bonkers" to fork out 4000 single dollar coins/notes, I am toying with the idea of actually painting the chrome rims in the brightest of "Silvers" in 2 - pack, spray the centre section in the car colours (MB 877 Petrol) and replace all fastening bolts in Stainless steels. I reckon it would look spectacular, and if I would ever put Gleaming Beauty on the market, I could offer those rims as an "OPTION", have the beautiful Speedies as the "standard tyre /rim fitment, with the chromed Baroque rims fitted presently as another OPTION. Well, you never know.....Gleaming Beauty will come onto the market at some future time, and the more one can offer, hopefully more interest could be created. Presently she is insured with Shannons for $46.000, and I would hope to get not less than sixty. Dreaming, dreaming...... Regards Styria

N.B. I have now come to the conclusion that the original Baroque rims are really quite unique and also they can be beautiful if painted a striking Silver or chromed - really, there is no more unique pattern on the market.

Although you can buy stainless steel wheel bolts as after-market items, you do need to be certain that they will do the job. Stainless steel generally does not have the torsional strength required for the job and that is why Mercedes-Benz recommends only heat treated or cold-forged steel.
Putting stainless steel bolts into a steel hub will also allowing galling to take place and they may be impossible to remove.

Chrome plating wheels is also an issue and many testers will not approve a RWC with them fitted. Same goes for stainless d shackles for trailer safety chains. They look great but with chromium added to the steel it can make them brittle so they’re unsuitable for heavy duty applications
