Mercedes fitted luggage

For many years, Mercedes offered fitted luggage for most of their models, both pre and post WW2. I have various sets for my 300b, 220s ponton, and last weekend, I picked up this set from an auction in Germany for my 170s. Frankly, I "stole" it at EUR 960. This set is made by Hepco, who were the suppliers to Mercedes after 1959 and had taken over from Karl Baisch as the OEM supplier.

In the same auction, there was also a set of Karl Baisch luggage - same as I have in the 300b. Check out the selling price !

That is impressive luggage Craig but the prices!

The prices could be worse. An original Hepco set for a 190SL have sold for $15,000 and there is no sign of them slowing down. When I work out the value of the fitted luggage, spare parts box and tool kit in my 300b, it is close to $12,000. Fortunately, I have been collecting fitted luggage for a number of years and have maybe 25 or so pieces, so my retirement is looking more secure by the day !

I find some of the prices staggering, especially in regards to the replica of the "ROTE SAU" (Euro $195K.) and a short wheelbase version of a 300SE, perceived to be the original race car. I know it's been fitted with a five speed manual Aston Martin transmission (I wonder from which model Aston) but again, the price ! Euro 65K. Not good value for money, in my opinion.

Getting back to the luggage - yes, it is remarkable for its condition, and I guess it is almost a work of art in today's climate. Thanks for posting the details. Regards Styria

N.B. You've got to like the luggage with the interior Gullwing pattern being so prominent. Beautiful.
