There is no doubt that this article illustrates the joys of ownership of these Coupes. Judge for yourself. Regards Styria

Helmet, I am fairly certain that the late models in this series was fitted with the gear selector on the tunnel. It's an expensive car alright, but obviously in lovely condition. Just a couple of observations and opinions on my part. Firstly, I never cease to be amazed how white walls complement the original Bundts so beautifully. It completely transforms the appearance of the wheels. Secondly, personally, I much prefer the earlier series (220, 250, 300) with the timber instrument binnacle - I guess by the time the 3.5 was introduced, even Mercedes must have thought that the timber item to be too expensive to put in a car.

I have also driven a 300SE Coupe at length, but did not think its suspension was as fluid and comfortable as a 220SE Convertible which was absolutely magnificent. I will find and scan a photo of that car just to illustrate what I am talking about. I have also driven, at length, a manual 280SE 3.5 Coupe, but did not like the gearbox. There was nothing wrong with its operation - slightly long throws when changing, but 1st and 2nd were goat track gears, with a big, big ratio gap to third. That car had rust problems aplenty, but the interior had been completely refurbished. Brand new GAHH carpets, with the rear ones GLUED to the floor so that you couldn't see the rust (!), and new leather covers had been fitted over seats that were completely worn out. I must find the pic of that 220SE Convertible and share them with you guys - what a looker. Regards Styria

Just a short note on the 3.5 V8 installation under the bonnet (well, where else, silly !). I tend to think that it is very messy - there are pipes and oil hoses running everywhere from one side of the engine to the other, and every which way, and working on them is not an easy task. Helmet, I'd be interested in your opinion. Sure, they are faster and have more grunt than the sixes, but.....Regards Styria

Hi Styria, I probably tend to agree with you on the engine bays looking a bit untidy on 3.5. It didn't get the plastic cover over all the wiring and piping as today's cars:)
I'm still puzzled with the gear indicator on the 3.5 cab mention above. I was talking about the indicator in the dash, these are only fitted on column shift versions, maybe this car has been modified to a floor shift ?

I am a subscriber to the Mercedes Heritage Centre, and the latest newsletter talks in some detail about the 300SE Coupe/Cabriolet. Here are the details:

http://www.mercedesheritage.com/2012/300se/

I found this feature to be excellent reading as I do know a fair bit about the air suspended models, including this 300SE Coupe - Not the one featured in the article. It's a very frank assessment - in fact, almost too much so. I disagree with their assessment of the airsuspension foibles. Once the system is sorted, it's ultra reliable. Suspension valves can be sourced locally, and Air Bags, whilst expensive, should comfortably last five to six years.

That engine though - it is a work of art, and expensive. Totally unique in design, with a flat head and single overhead camshaft, and the combustion chambers are contained within the shape of the piston crown - like in, guess what ? The ROVER 6 cylinder engine that had its origins back in 1948 and culminated in its final form in 1967 - almost twenty years. Anyway, this 300 Benz engine is an all alloy affair, and actually quite noisy in operation. They reckoned you could always HEAR them coming. I used to have a Finnie type 300SEL Sedan, with that very same engine. At slow speeds it was horrible, at high speeds it turned into a jewel of an engine. The water pump was located at the right hand side of the engine block, and driven by a humongous flexibly coupled generator. On some models (later), there was an oil temperature controlled engine fan. I can tell you, that was quite an engine - I just wish I could illustrate with photos. Hope you guys enjoy my ramblings. Regards Styria
