manual gearbox for 4.5 w116.

Hello to all. I would like to know if it is possible to match up a manual gearbox to my w116 4.5 and if so what model would it come from and would it be merely a big job or more likely a monumental task. Cheers Paul.

Its a monumental job but I think Big Boys Toys in Sydney can do a 5 speed conversion for you if you have the folding stuff.

Manual V8 cars are so rare in Aus, never sold here originally so all need to be private or grey-market imports so are very hard to find. Same goes for 6cyl manual cars though there are a few more of those than V8s.

MB never sold V8 versions of the 450, only the 350 SE, apparently due to the large increase of torque in the 450 over the 350 engine, probably break the box in short time if you 4.5 engine makes anywhere near factory horsepower.

There is a member of the NSW club currently having a 4 speed automatic from a 126 fitted to his 350!!
I have asked him to get the details and photos if possible as I am sure others would be interested in a similar conversion option when the time comes to work on their 116 auto.

It is possible that one could fity a Supra 5 Speed Manual to the V8 motor.

The 4 speed autos from W126s are a straight bolt on fit, but not as reliable as the older generation.

They once did an adapter plate for a Supra to MB motor, but need to confirm the pattern.

I've always thought the w126 V8 transmission was a different bolt pattern to the V8 w116s' and just recently, the vid I posted up about a demolition derby 450, the guy is a tranny specialist and said he had a 126 tranny but it was different and wouldn't bolt up. No experience myself, just repeating what I've read or been told. Would be great to hear more if it can be done and what's involved.

So far as supra manual 5speeds are concerned, it's not the first time they've come up, but I've yet to see an example. Would definitely be interested to hear more should anyone come across a who-done-it or how-to.

I have spoken with Dellows who make adapter plates for Jag XK engines [a mate of mine has a Supra Gearbox on his Jag].

The chap said that he had an adapter that they did some years ago,but couldn't be certain what MB motor it was set up for.

He said that if I could send over a drawing of the engine mounting points he could cross reference.

So.... waiting for someone who has a motor that can be used to make a 'brass rubbing' to get the outline and stud holes.

Brass rubbings are created by laying a sheet of paper on top of a brass and rubbing the paper with graphite, wax, or chalk.

Thanks to all for the input on the question of a transmition change for my 4.5 w116. I will follow up with Dellows but I would like to know if anyone is aware of anyone who has actually changed their transmission to either a four speed W126 or Supra five speed manual box. Any info would be appreciated. Cheers Paul.
