Any help is appreciated, I am rebuilding a 722.002 trans from a 1980 W116 350SE euro spec.
The lock ring on B1 drum broke and came out in pieces which is what prompted the rebuild. Everything else inside checks out nicely.
I made the mistake of engaging the services of a 'specialist' to help me, since its my first trans rebuild. He was careless in the way he disassebled B2/K2 (the rear most clutch pack). One of the springs was broken, which we replaced, fair enough. During reassembly we found we were two springs short of the max that the drum can hold. He was not sure if they were absent from the factory, or if he simply lost them. I could kick is backside, since now I am unsure about how many springs to install. As I understand it, if there are too many springs, we may have slipping.
It did seem odd to me that TWO springs would be absent from the factory - zero or 3 absent would have made more sense.
So, does anyone have general experience -
a) should I install the max number of springs
b) would it be typical to have 3 absent from a 722.002 K2?
c) is there a procedure and specs to assess the force in the assembly and thereby determine if springs should be added or removed?
Please help!
