Not that I can recall viewing any posts on the subject of Unleaded Fuel and its use in W116's; but I just found a useful publication frm BP indicating the safe use of Unleaded fuels in various older models.

Kindly it has included various MB vehicles including the W116.

I'd like to upload this file, being in PDF format it isn't an acceptable format, perhaps the administrator can advise me how to email it to them and I can send it for inclusion in the webiste library.

Australian delivered model 116 Series V8's had the low pollution engine from 1976, these had hardened valve seats etc so any 450 from 1976 on can use unleaded fuel without an additive.

For all sorts of earlier models (Mercedes and other Marks)there is enough evidence reported that earlier years are also safe using unleaded fuel without additives, years of use with leaded fuel seemingly giving a 'lead memory' and the seats hardening with use, provided the engine is not used under heavy load or sustained high revs. It seems that valve seat recession accelerates rapidly from about 3000 revs; (BMC engines at even lower revs) so if you regularly use over 3000 revs why take a chance on not using a recommended additive for valve seat protection.

Don't try using one of those in-line tin loaded "fuel catalysts."
