The transmission in my 6.3 has had a slight leak ever since I bought it, when driven daily it used to reduce to a drip every other day so it was never really a problem however reduced use would result in a larger loss. Of course it gradually got worse until the car was simply undriveable, 2 litres every 10km
2 minutes idling produced this leak
The only solution was to drop (more on that later) the box and and renew the seals in the box and fluid coupling.
Time to put my hoist to good use
I removed the tailshaft, exhaust and other bits and pieces in no time at all, then, as the manual shows the 6 bolts that hold the coupling to the back of the crankshaft.
Time for the heavy work so with the help of a very experienced fellow (Thanks Styria) we removed the fluid cooler lines, remaining bell housing bolts and a few bits and pieces then started to drag the box back to allow it to drop down, no matter what we did the coupling would not come back with the box
Then I discovered the last 2 bolts holding the coupling to the crank, M100's have 8, not six as shown in the manual
With these removed and an hour wasted we finally lowered the transmission hoist and the tranny was clear and ready to carry to the bench.
Instead we dropped it on the floor
I'm not really sure how we managed it but all of a sudden it started sliding off the hoist past the point of no return. We sort of had hold of it so instead of free falling it rolled to the floor and by the grace of god didn't suffer any damage of land on our feet
Talk about a comedy of errors.
With the box on the floor we removed the fluid coupling, front pump and valve body.
Styria check the band clearences which were within spec and took away the valve body and front pump to clean and replace the seals and I took the coupling to Torque Convertor Industries just around the corner who replaced the seals and add 2 additional O-rings then pressure tested it.
They only took 3 days and charged $100 less than the quoted price
The box will hopefully go back in on Wednesday.
In the mean time I have degreased underneath the car to remove the muck and gunk that was left after Styria wiped most of it off into his hair
He said it took 10 washes to get it all out, luckily I'm a bit shorter then him
I also adjusted the hoist so it can lift about 2 inches higher to clear his scone.
Stay tuned for the next comical episode
