At the suggestion of motec 6.9 here is some pics of my W116. It is a 1974 280 SE with 106,426 kms. I am the third owner. The car was delivered new by Lanes Motors Melbourne on 22nd March 1974 on Victorian plates LVB-061 to a business named Jacka Sales P/L located in Pelham Street, Carlton in Melbourne. (Does anyone know of that business, looked it up but was de-listed some years ago??)

On 23rd March 1979 (End of a 5 year lease plus one day??) the car passed to the second owner, Ron S from Wheelers Hill Victoria through Lanes Motors again with 73,978 kms showing. Ron used the car sparingly as a second car, putting only a further 16,741 kms over the next 28 years taking the mileage to 90,719kms in 2007. He was very obsessive about it, in 1979, not long after purchase, he cleaned the underside and didn't drive the car in the rain again under his ownership. He won the MBCV annual concours with it that year. Despite its low annual mileage, he without fail, gave the car an annual service.

On 17th. July 2007 I purchased the car privately from Ron with 90,719kms. I set about a mild re-commissioning, replacing hoses and perished rubbers along with removal of the centre console due to the fact it had discoloured and I wished to re dye it. At this time, the centre console was repaired, it was damaged due to a ham fisted radio installation in 1979. The car was ready at the end of 2007 and I have used it regularly since then, the mileage today reading 106,426 kms. I don't drive it in the rain either!

I have been lucky in my 46 years and owned some interesting cars, but this car is very special to me. Apart from its condition, I have every service invoice from delivery including the original warranty card, pre-delivery check list, three keys, all the books, tools, receipts for everything even down to the batteries it's had. The best thing about it, is the car is not restored. It's had paint in 1991 up to the top of the doors but that's the only panel work its had. Just three sympathetic owners.

I had a good go at the MBCV annual concours in 2011 and was amazed the car won best car and best interior. I have no intention of entering it again, just enjoying it as it was intended, weather permitting.

Today I drove it to work, despite its 40 years and the 43 degree top temperature today, the air conditioning was cold and the coolant stayed put at 95 degrees. It's a remarkable car to drive even now, imagine what it must have been like in 1974?

Some pics....

Hi Carl nearest i can find is probably this company. http://www.localblue.com.au/profile...rvices+pty+ltd&word=cartridge+refills+&+sales . Geoff or they are property lawyers http://www.jackalawyers.com.au/

I searched Geoff for the first owner when I first bought the car in 2007 but came up with nothing. Neither the computer business nor the carburettor business knew of any prior association.

I as not aware of Jacka Lawyers however. Oddly, just 7 minutes drive from my factory. I have just sent Tim Jacka an email, we will see!

Thanks for the information.

My personal opinion is that the XT is the best of the bunch. The 302 is still revvy and they are a fair bit lighter than the later XW and XY variants. For something on cart springs they go pretty well. I wouldn't mind a really nice no stories XT (Are they around??), a XW Phase II or an RPO83 sedan.

My problem with the muscle cars is it's very difficult to justify the insane prices for things like the Phase II and III when there are cars like Lamborghini Diablos Turbo Porsches and Ferrari testarossas for 1/3 the price!

The XR actually doesn't belong to me technically. It belongs to my associate, a serious Ford collector, I just liked it so I took it off him. He's got too many cars anyway!

The Ferrari 512 is really good, the engine is amazing. But they are weak in the transaxle, you have to be very careful with them if they don't have the later uprated differential carrier. And you have to remove the engine to change the cam belts, how dumb is that!

Fast though, here is a pic in my friends 512, still accellerating hard, speedo in mph :)

Ok i will have a bit of a search tomorrow for you. I had a ride in a silver 512 back in the 90's the lady at the controls knew how to drive. But then she raced at Bathurst and so did her father. :D

Aha, must have been Cheryl B, have a pic of that car at Winton Raceway in about 1984. I'll dig it out of you like. It was a 365 BB if it's her car.

Yes thats the car Ray was a friend the late John Phillips of Progress motors in Queanbeyan. Tania's then boyfriend now husband was doing up a HQ Monaro coupe that made the top 50 at Summernats. And John was a good friend i was around seeing him one day and Tania pulled up with her dad's Ferrari i made the comment it was a nice car. And then enjoyed about a 30 minute ride.

Carl, your 280SE is simply superb!
Like yours, ours had manual window winders and the absence of extra-cost door mouldings.
We had the Becker Mexico pinstripe radio model and Hirschmann aerial which I love.
She'd look good rafted up next to my white 6.9! Like two Swans.
Thanks for sharing.
