Good morning,
I own a 1989 420SEL W126 with 321,000kms I'd like to share my road trip experience here thank you.
2022 the MBCNSW club held a National rally to SA in April 2022 and I was going with a group Benz friends from the club but unfortunately I had work commitments and sadly backed out.
December 2022 my wife suggested to continue on doing the South Australia run this school holidays, so straight away the car was at the mechanics for full service e.g belts & hose replacement. Power steering service and control were due for replacement and others.
The next week a day began after Christmas I'd pack the car with suitcase and car emergency parts of broken down, mostly common jump starter, Tyre inflator, cable ties, spare 126 alternator, engine fluids, oil and coolant.
We left the next morning cruising highway speed 110 to a suburb called Hay lovely quiet country town stayed for one night. The next morning we left again passing through Mildura and temperature outside was max 46 to 48 degrees stopped for a tea break. There on we continued to our 3 night stay at Barossa Valley I highly recommend booking a shuttle bus for some wine tasting and this place is know for its Shiraz.
Last morning we headed straight to Adelaide City for three nights stayed for New year day was worth it the W126 handled really well me and my wife took turns from Sydney onwards driving the 420SEL such a great car.
After new year was over my wife suggested a place to visit is Mungo National Park 6 hr drive from Adelaide City heading North it's between Mildura and Broken but closer to Mildura the whole road to get to the Mugo lodge was setup for off-road vehicle and yes why would I drive a W126 there? Well I don't have a SUV and we really wanted to see the oldest human remains on the earth dating back 60000 years ago and there use to be lake there 15 metre deep which disappeared 40000 years ago. So there goes the W126 doing its job what it was made to do my cars are no garage queen they get driven I work on them so I guess I best to enjoy them too. This car honestly handled really well it lived up to it's engineers saying 'The best or nothing'.
Second morning we have left heading back towards Sydney but stayed at Griffith for a night just to visit the town just a stroll around the local shops and RSL for dinner the next morning was 7hts back to Sydney the W126 was on cruise doing 110 no problem the SLS rides well the AC was nice and cool just short stops for refuelling and we continued on arriving safely home Sydney the 420SEL still wanted to go beyond Sydney but we made it back cause I had work commitments.
Overall this was our best experience and a great road I'd do it again with our W126 I've attached photos please feel free to check them out.
