This type of thread has probably been done a thousand times over, but it doesn't hurt to revisit such things.
What is it you love about the W116, or in the interest of inclusion, alternative model of Benz? This isn't meant to be the W116 Superiority Thread I know a lot of us here probably have a fair bit of experience owning/driving W116's, but for instance I know our very own Tim loves his W126 to bits and I'm sure would have his own compliments to say on that model, and no doubt there's many TK members with other models which they might prefer.
For me, sometimes for reasons I can't always fully understand, I cannot be ultimately drawn away from the W116 Mercs. I appreciate all the classic Mercedes cars, but the W116 just has that "something", when I look at one or sit in one/drive it.
It's like the cars are old enough to be considered a classic and have oodles of character, but at the same time they're modern enough to have creature comforts and road behavior that still holds up very well to this day. W124 and W126 (etc) owners would probably feel the same about their cars too, perhaps even more so, if they value the more modern advancements.
But something about the huge hunk of metal and chrome that is the W116 just seems to do it for me. Some people I believe find the W116's body lines to be harsh and ungraceful, but I actually find it to be a beautiful looking beast, especially the examples in great condition.
Little short on time so I'll probably have more to add later, but suffice to say, despite being big heavy, fuel guzzling, rusting behemoths compared to some cars out there, the W116 just has a charm I can't go past It probably helps that I had experience riding in them as a child, so perhaps nostalgia plays a part too But it's fair to say it left an impression.
