Lower your W116? [Read: 'Pimp Your W116']

Ok Peoples....

Can I get a raise of hands for who wants lower / slightly firmer springs for your W116??

I know the ride of these puppies is pretty comfortable, but if you have a pimpin' 116 it would look killer if it were 1-2 inches lower!! :D


I'll be organising a run of springs to get made up by King Springs. Now the springs i'll be getting will be lower and a shyteload firmer on the front and pretty firm on the rear. However at the same time, if anyone's interested, i'll get them to do another set of springs for 116's that are a little lower and slightly firmer.

Cost is between $270-300 per end. So maximum would be $600 for the whole car (for those with no SLS).

Has anyone else around here performed or investigated this modification??

Naaa, dont need lower springs to pimp my W116; I just leave it parked for a week and it dumps itself on its guts :D

Yes, I did when I converted my 6.9 suspension. Switched from the standard MB 450 sel spring to the Eibach 11" x 700lb. lower ride and much stiffer.

That's awesome!! Good to know.

Are these springs that can be sourced from anywhere? Eg.. they weren't custom made?

Let me clarify one thing, I'm talking about the rear springs. Yes, just check out the EIbach web site. They were about $60 ea.

Just called up the Australian Eibach shop.
As soon as i said 78 mercedes, and any 'high-er' spec suspension / springs etc. The girl just said no, she didn't check or anything.

"That's too old, we wouldn't do anything like that". <--Hate this attitude!

Can you point me the link for the rear springs and what model they actually are / were for?

Just go to the Eibach web site and download their catalogue. Go to "Motorsports", the section on rear springs. You want the 11" by 5" OD rated at 700 lbs. The part number reflects the aforementioned. Ignore that air head, they only cross reference newer cars. I purchased the widest "spacer" or "shim" for the 116 put one on top spring pearch and one below under the spring in the subframe socket. Unlike the MB spring the Eibach has tapered ends and thusly sits flat. I used a sharp knife to taper and cut the lower shim for a better fit. Keep in mind that the rear weight of the 6.9 may be higher than the 4.5. Also, the ID on the EIbach is smaller, but it works.

selfor50: I also used the tech support on the Eibach site, they can be helpful. Just explain what you want to do. Be prepared to give wieght on wheel, uncompressed height on MB spring, which I believe is 15", and the height when compressed. Actually, they can calculate rating of MB spring once they know the two heights.
